Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies took down the Université De Moncton Aigles Bleues with a tight 2-1 overtime victory. The game's story was Mariah Carey (Avonport, NS), who scored both goals to give the Tommies the victory. The Tommies also outshot University De Moncton 37-20.
Both teams would have plenty of chances in the first, but it would be the Tommies who struck first, scoring a power play goal 18:26 into the frame. This power play goal for the Tommies was vital as the team has struggled to get the power play producing. The first period shots were eight-seven in favor of the Tommies.
The second period had plenty of chances; but due to an unfortunate turn over in the Tommies' zone, UdeM would strike five minutes in, scoring their first goal of the game and tying it up at one a piece. Both teams would have a couple more chances in the second but were unable to take the lead and headed to the third all tied up.
The third frame had plenty of chances with the Tommies outshooting UdeM 11-8. Despite outshooting them, the Tommies were unable to get one in the back of the net.
The overtime frame was a swift one, with Carey getting her second of the game and getting the win for the Tommies, putting on an amazing performance. Caroline Pietroski (Etobicoke, ON) would stop 19 shots for the win, while Audrey Berthiaume would make 34 saves in the loss.
"We needed that, we really pulled it together and fought hard throughout it," said Carey on her team's performance against UdeM.
"It was just going to take getting one to have it start clicking," said Tommies' head coach, Peter Murphy, on the team's powerplay.
"She picked up right where she left off," said Murphy about his goaltender, Pietroski, performance after missing the past two games.
