SMU holds off StFX 88-80 in women’s basketball

HALIFAX, NS - The Saint Mary's Huskies fended off the StFX X-Women on Wednesday night in AUS women's basketball action from the Homburg Centre to take an 88-80 win.

StFX's Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) paced all scorers with 23 points while Clara Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS) and Arianna Macias had 17 points apiece for Saint Mary's.

Gascoigne had 11 points in the first quarter as SMU jumped out to a 23-13 lead after ten minutes.

Fraser added 11 points in the second quarter as StFX outscored Saint Mary's 29-19 and erased SMU's lead to go into halftime tied 42-42.

Jamie McCarron (New Glasgow, ON) chipped in eight points for StFX but they were outscored by SMU 22-19 in the third quarter and the Huskies led 64-61 after 30 minutes.

Macias scored 10 points in the final frame, including 2-for-2 from three-point land, as SMU outscored the X-Women 24-19 in the quarter and held on for the 88-80 victory.

Fraser shot 8-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-9 from deep for StFX, who drop to 1-3 in conference play.

McCarron finished with 13 points for X, while teammates Briar MacDonald (Antigonish, NS) and Karina Sarai (Surrey, BC) each had 12 points.

Macias, a 5-9 guard from Tampa, Florida, had a monster night for the Huskies. The fourth-year player had a double-double on 17 points and 12 rebounds and added six assists and four steals.

SMU's Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) finished with 15 points while Kendra MacKinnon (Pictou, NS) had 12 points as SMU improves to 3-2 in AUS play.

Both teams conclude their home-and-home series November 16th at 6 p.m. in Antigonish.
