(MONCTON, NB) The visiting UNB REDS scored twice in the first 12 minutes on route to a 3-1 win over the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus, on Sunday afternoon.

"It's always great to start the season with a win and get three points," said REDS head coach Barry Morrison. "Today's game lays a strong foundation for us to build on this fall."

Ryan Jetten (Kanata, ON) opened the scoring in the 7th minute, heading a Lars Gierull (Ottawa, ON) corner past Moncton keeper Christian Masimengo (Dieppe, NB).

Keji Adeniyi (London, UK) extended UNB's lead in the 11th minute, taking a pass up the middle and racing past a Moncton defender before firing a shot past Masimengo.

Justin Brown (Newmarket, ON) made it a 3-0 game in the 36th minute.

"We had some excellent passages of play and saw some areas that we can tidy up, which is expected at this point," said Morrison. "I'm proud that we were able to get five players their first Atlantic University Sport minutes and Justin Brown scored his first AUS goal."

David Guichard (Remire-Monjoly, Guyana) scored for the home team, in the 80th minute, but that was as close as les Aigles Bleus would get.

Louis-Charles Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, QC) made eight saves on nine shots on the UNB net, while Masimengo made four saves on seven shots on the Moncton net.

Gierull, who had an assist, registered a shot on goal and put in a solid performance at both ends of the field, was named the Subway Player of the Game.

"Getting points early in the season is really important," said Gierull. "The team we have is young, but is more connected than ever and we'll only go up from here."

The REDS take their 1-and-0 record into their home-opener next Saturday, against Dalhousie.

Game time is 1:00pm.

Moncton will host Acadia the same day.
