RECAP: Gee-Gees ride early flurry of goals to 4-1 win over rival Ravens
The Gee-Gees women's hockey team downed their crosstown rival Carleton Ravens 4-1 on Friday night, improving their record to 2-0 on the young season.
Ottawa opened the scoring with Kylie Lalonde scoring her second of the season tipping in Taylor Sims' shot to give the Gee-Gees an early lead only five minutes into the match.
Kate Maclean wasted no time in extending the Ottawa lead just over two minutes later, hammering home a loose puck after a scramble in front of the net.
In the later stages of the first frame, Taylor Scott flicked a pinpoint pass from Sophie Gareau top shelf for to break the game wide open for the Gee-Gees.
Early in the second period, the Ottawa kept pouring it on, with Katherine Birkby beating Carleton goalie Frédérike Lavoie-Leroux for the host's fourth of the night.
In all, Gee-Gees goalie Aurélie Dubuc logged an outstanding performance, turning away 24 shots including a number of key stops in the later stages of the game.
Carleton's lone goal came on a Cecilia Lopez shot that trickled through with just over three minutes remaining and a comeback out of reach.
"I think it was really important that we had a good start to the game," said Gee-Gees assistant coach Greg Bowles. "Getting three in the first period was no surprise because the girls had lots of energy getting on the attack. Trying to get on the front foot was really important, that was what the game plan was and we came out and executed."
With the win, the Gee-Gees draw even with Bishop's, who have also started the year 2-0, heading into a road matchup at McGill next Friday, before hosting Carleton again on Saturday.
"Getting two wins off the start is a great way to start the season," said Birkby. "We just have to work on maintaining that and playing our best and hopefully more wins will come. I think we're off to a good start."
