WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Axewomen picked up three points in an important win coming off of tie against Saint Mary's on Friday.
A somewhat overconfident team against the Huskies on Friday, rebounded with a tough fought 1-0 win over rival StFX.
"I think we underestimated the SMU team that we played, and in the last minutes of every game we are getting a little bit nonchalant about our pressure and keeping up with the play, even though we are up. So I think this game was good because we got that chance and finished it. We still maintained possession and put up the pressure and didn't let down. It was a team effort today," noted team captain Lauren Jodrey following the game.
On the stats board, things were pretty much even with the X-Women edging Acadia with 18 shots on net versus the Axewomen's 17. Keeper Christina Gentile was tested with eight saves, while Acadia's Milena Ramirez saved six.
Only one shot got past today's keepers. Rosie Nichols' netted her third goal of the season at the 68th minute, assisted by Meghan Johnston.
The X-Women had an incredible chance in the closing minute of the game, but Ramirez came up with the play of the game, stopping a breakaway shot from Brynn Jurus.
"They are really great (StFX) and their mid-field is excellent, so it was really hard for us initially in the first half to kinda work with that, but once we got it, we worked together and we broke it down and it was magic after that," said Jodrey.
The Axewomen improve to a 4-1-2 record and third place in the AUS standings with the win, while StFX drops to 4-3-0 and finds themselves fifth overall in the standings.
Acadia will host 4-1-1 Dalhousie this Thursday before the Thanksgiving break and the StFX travels to Saint Mary's on Thursday.
