Gaels take down No. 10 Lancers

| By:
BOX SCORE WINDSOR, Ont. (October 8, 2011) - Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta. and the Gaels upended the No. 10 Windsor Lancers by a 27-14 score.

The Gaels opened the scoring early in the second quarter on a 15 yard touchdown pass from Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont. to Alex Carroll of Victoria and went up by a 7-0 margin.

The score remained 7-0 for most of the second quarter until a Windsor drive culminated in a 24 yard pass from Austin Kennedy of Windsor, Ont. to Evan Pszczonak of Amherstbug, Ont. to tie the game at 7-7 going into halftime.

The Gaels were the first to pull ahead midway through the third quarter on a 29 yard field goal by Dan Village of Abbotsford, B.C. to give them a 10-7 cushion. The Lancers responded on the ensuing drive however as they drove the field from their own 35 yard line as Kennedy hit Dylan Whitfield of Windsor, Ont. over the middle for a 14 yard touchdown play.

Down 14-10 in the fourth quarter, the Gaels responded with a strong rushing attack as Granberg took several carries to bring the Gaels down the field. Granberg would finish what he started with a four yard rushing touchdown to put the Gaels up by a 17-14 margin and they didn't look back.

The Gaels controlled the fourth with strong performances on defence and on the ground as they limited the Lancers offence before turning the reins over to the offence who let Granberg carry them down the field. Granberg added a second rushing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter from 24 yards outside the Lancers endzone to put the Gaels up by a 24-14 score. A 41 yard Dan Village field goal provided the dagger, making the score 27-14.

Austin Kennedy was the top performer for the Lancers as he threw for 308 yards on 26 completions. Shomari Grant, a Florida native, was the Lancers' top rusher with 55 yards on 10 carries. Cory Fernandes of Windsor, Ont. was Kennedy's favourite target on the evening, as he hauled in nine catches for 86 yards.

Granberg was the most productive Gael on offence with a 241 yard performance on 29 carries. Billy McPhee rebounded from a rough week five outing in Toronto and threw for 237 yards on 16 completions. Giovanni Aprile of Toronto was the Gaels top receiver with  105 yards receiving on six catches.

On defence, Sean Plumley of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. was the Gaels leading tackler in his first career start with 7.5. Andrew Lue of Toronto also made several key tackles, while Ben D'Andrea of Calgary had the biggest hit of the game when he flattened a scrambling Kennedy over the middle of the field. T.J. Chase-Dunawa of Toronto intercepted a Kennedy pass in the endzone to seal the victory for the Gaels with under two minutes to play in the game.

With the win, the Gaels will return home next Saturday October 15 as they host the Waterloo Warriors at Richardson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1pm.
