Antigonish, NS – The Acadia Axemen stormed into STFX territory Friday night, delivering a dominant 8-3 win and spoiling the X-Men's home opener in convincing fashion.
STFX struck first with a quick goal just 46 seconds into the game, but it didn't take long for the Axemen to seize control. Cam MacDonald (Hammonds Plains, NS) answered back midway through the first period, beating X goalie Patrick Leaver (Perth, ON) with a high shot, setting off a scoring spree for the visitors. Brendan Sellan (Bolton, ON) followed up just a minute later, benefiting from a fortuitous deflection that gave Acadia the lead. Corson Hopwo (Duncan, BC) capped off the first period with a well-placed high shot, putting Acadia ahead 3-1 despite a close shot count of 12-11 in favor of STFX.
The Axemen carried their momentum into the second period. Peyton Hoyt (Fredericton, NB) extended the lead early on with a perfectly placed shot over Leaver's shoulder, followed by Kian Bell's (Fall River, NS) power-play marker at 5:57, giving Acadia a commanding 5-1 lead. STFX's penalty troubles continued, leaving them unable to mount any significant offense.
Acadia's relentless pressure continued in the third period. Bell scored his second of the night, and Brady Burns (Port Williams, NS) made it 7-1 after a strange bounce off the boards found its way into the X net. Though the X-Men added two quick goals, Acadia rounded out the scoring with a late power-play goal from Ethan Ernst (Weyburn, SK), sealing the 8-3 victory.
Axemen goalie Thomas Couture (Levis, QC) was stellar in net, making 26 saves and earning first star and player of the game honors. Peyton Hoyt, with a goal and an assist, was named the second star, while STFX's Alex Christopoulos (Richmond Hill, ON), who had a goal and two assists, was awarded third star.
The Axemen outshot the X-Men 34-29 and will look to continue their winning ways as they return home to host the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday, October 12th, with puck drop set for 7:00 pm.
