Bisons improve to 2-0 in women's basketball

Eyer and Gill hit a combined nine three pointers to lead Manitoba

Box Score Robyn Eyer hit four three pointers in the third quarter to lead the Manitoba Bisons women's basketball team to a 73-48 victory over the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).

Eyer finished with five triples and a game-high 17 points to lead the Bisons. Stephanie Gill chipped in with 14 for the home team, who improve to a perfect 2-0 on the season. Manitoba has now matched their overall win total from last season.

"It feels really good but we got to keep working because in the Canada West, you can't take a weekend off," said Bisons co-head coach Michele Hynes.

Jordan McLean led Mount Royal with 13 points and five rebounds. First year guard Alicia Tan also had 11 points for the Cougars, who drop to 0-2.

Neither team got off to a great start in the first quarter with each committing a handful of turnovers. Mount Royal led by one after the first but the Bisons battled back before the half expired. Allison Balasko, who played a key role in last night's win, hit a jumper from the top of the key with three minutes left to give Manitoba their largest lead to that point at eight.

The Bisons out-rebounded their opponents by a margin of nine in the half and led 35-28. Of the 23 rebounds collected by Manitoba, seven were on the offensive end. Stephanie Gill led the home side with eight points at the break while Alicia Tan had 11 points to pace the Cougars.

Manitoba would take control of the game in the third quarter. They would extend their lead to 16 early on thanks in part to Eyer. The fourth year guard hit three triples within in the span of four possessions to help the home team open up a huge lead. The Bisons, who shot a lights out 10-for-17 (58.8%) in the quarter, would lead by 21 after three.

"Certain players have the green light to shoot the ball when they get daylight," said Hynes. "We got really good defensive stops which allowed us a lot of space in transition and we hit those threes because we were in the right rhythm."

Mount Royal would start the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run and looked to get back into the game. However, they were unable to sustain any prolonged attack offensively and the Bisons would stay undefeated in the young season.
