The Mount Allison Mounties were defeated 5-2 by the UdeM Aigles Bleues at the Tantramar Civic Centre in Sackville on Saturday evening.
Three unanswered goals by the Mounties, included an empty netter, proved to be the difference in a game that was close until late in the game.
The visiting Aigles Bleues opened the scoring at 13:56 of the 1st period when Maritza Labrie scored on a play assisted by Lianne Desforges. The visitors took the 1-0 lead into the locker room after the first period.
The Mounties tied the game early in the 2nd period when senior Julia Aurora scored on a strong shorthanded effort at the 1:25 mark. Janie Poitras scored her first of 2 goals on the night when she scored on the power play at 10:15 of the 2nd period.
The Mounties once again responded when Molly Baxendale picked up a Moncton turnover and went in all alone on Annick Boudreau, Baxendale beat Boudreau five hole and with 8 minutes remaining in the 2nd period the score was tied 2-2.
Cassandra Call scored the eventual game winner for Moncton at 7:10 of the 3rd period. Shani Rossignol picked up an assist on the play. The Mounties pushed hard for the equalizer but when Poitras scored her 2ndof the game with 2:38 to play, the game moved out of reach. Call added her 2nd of the night when she scored and empty netter with 30 seconds to play to bring the final to 5-2.
Boudreau made 19 saves on 21 shots for Moncton while Bianca Zak kicked out 35 of the 39 shots she faced in goal for the Mounties.
