Mounties finish regular season with 18-2 win over Gaiters

The Mount Allison Mounties finished the AUS football regular season with an 18-2 win over the Bishop's Gaiters at Alumni Field on Saturday. With the win, the Mounties finish 5-1 while Bishop's drops to 2-4. Today's outcome had no impact on the AUS standings as it had already been determined that the 2nd place Mounties will host the 3rd place Gaiters in one of two Subway AUS Semi-Final games next Saturday, November 13th at 2PM at Alumni Field.

The game started as a defensive battle very similar to the first meeting between these two teams, when the Mounties won 10-7 at Bishop's in late September. Neither team was able to pick up more than a single point in the opening 2 quarters as the teams headed to the locker room tied at 1-1.

Bishop's were the first to score when they picked up a rouge on a Yani Gouadfel punt with 1:30 remaining in the first half. The Mounties responded when James Parker sailed a punt through the end zone on the final play of the first half to knot the score at 1-1.

Playing against the wind in the 3rd quarter didn't slow the Mounties as they put 10 points on the board to open and 11-1 lead. The scoring started with 7 minutes gone in the 3rd quarter when Parker connected on a 39 yard field goal after the Mounties drove 24 yards into field goal range.

The Mounties went back to work on their next possession, driving 82 yards before senior Adam Bennett scored from 5 yards out for the game's first major.

Bishop's tried to cut into the lead early in the 4th quarter but a missed field goal by Noah Laursen only gave the Gaiter a single point to move the score to 11-2.

After a Mounties stop deep in Bishop's territory gave the Mounties good field position, quarterback Julian Wytinck connected with freshman Morie Kamara for a 44 yard touchdown to extend the lead to 18-2. This would end up being the last scoring play of the game.

Wytinck, who was 20 of 24 for the Mounties for 167 yards passing, 1 touchdown and 1 interception, was named the Subway Player of the Game.

Mason McGriskin was 8 of 12 for 62 yards for the Gaiters while Liam Kennedy was 7 of 12 for 58 yards.

Graeme Stevens led all Mounties with 9.5 tackles and 1 tackle for loss as he celebrated senior day with his teammates. Lucas Cormier had 6.5 tackles.

Bishop's were led by Jakob Matheson who had 6.5 tackles.

These two teams will face off again on Saturday, November 13th in the Subway AUS semi-final game. The winner will advance to the 2021 Subway Loney Bowl against the winner of the other semi-final where Acadia travels to StFX.
