X-Women come from behind to earn win over Moncton

Antigonish, NS - The STFX X-Women kicked off their 2022-23 homestand with 3-2 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleues on Saturday evening at the Keating Centre.

The X-Women overcame a 2-0 deficit to score three unanswered goals and hung on for the win, as they improve to 4-0-1 on the season.

The Aigles Bleues kicked off the scoring at the 6:20 marker of the first period, with Erica Plourde (Pigeon-Hill, NB) potting a powerplay marker off a scramble and Emilie Lalancette (St. Andrews West, ON) assisting.

They added another while on the powerplay as time expired in the opening period, as Shani Rossignol (Notre Dame de Lourdes, NB) redirected a point shot from Pascale Lebeau (Lousieville, QC).

Despite the X-Women peppering the Moncton net with shots, goalie Annick Boudreau (Memramcook, NB) kept a clean sheet though the first 20 minutes. Shots at the end of the period were 11-7 in favour of X.

STFX got on the board first in the second period, with Lea MacLeod (Dartmough, NS) roofing a shot on a 2 on 1, with the assist coming off the stick of Vivian Hinch (Vancouver, BC) at 4:59.

Moncton threatened again late in the period, but Amaya Giraudier (Assiniboia, SK) made a couple of big saves while X was two players down. Shots at the end of the second were 19-17 in favour of Moncton.

An Aigles Bleues penalty late in the second period gave the X-Women a powerplay going into the third and the home team capitalized, with Maggy Burbidge (Falmouth,NS) sliding home an unassisted marker and tying the game at 2-2.

MacLeod put the X-Women in the lead, with another powerplay goal, coming with 7:50 left to play in the game. Assisting were Kya Moss (Port Moody, BC) and Chloe Vukosa (Mississauga, ON).

Moncton pressured late in the game and pulled their netminder while on a power play, and despite several frantic chances were unable to out it past Giraudier and the X-Women held on for the one-goal victory.

MacLeod's two goal performance earned her Subway Player of the game honours. Boudreau had 23 saves in the game, earning third star of the game honours, while Giraudier earned the win, and second star of the game with 25 saves on the night.

The X-Women next take to the ice on Sunday afternoon when they host the UPEI Panthers. Moncton hosts provincial rival UNB on October 28.
