GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's hockey shutout the visiting Queens Gaels tonight at the Gryphon Centre 4-0. Gryphon goalie Brandon Maxwell (Guelph, Ont.) earned his second shutout of the season to lead the Gryphons to their fifth straight victory.
The Gryphons are now 7-4-1 on the season while the Gaels drop to 4-3-2.
The game started out fast-paced and evenly matched, with only 18 shots in the first period (14 by your Guelph Gryphons). Both teams displayed outstanding fore- and back- checking and a lot of finesse – only two penalty minutes were recorded in the first period. The Gryphons were able take a lead in the first period 2-0. Rookie
Brett Appio (Bolton, Ont.) opened up this evening's scoring with a hard-work goal from
Jordan Mock (Dartmouth, NS) and
Matthew Lyall (Richmond Hill, Ont.) at 15:08. Mock responded with the Gryphons' second goal of the evening at 16:27 with assists from Appio and
Nicholas Trecapelli(Guelph, Ont.).
The second period saw an equally fast pace and another low score, with no goals recorded until the 19:10 mark, when Gryphons'
Jon-Thomas MacDonald (Niagara Falls, Ont.) scored from a wide-open corner of the Gaels' net. Gryphon's net-minder,
Brandon Maxwell, stopped seven shots in the second period.
The third period was more aggressive than the previous two, with a few scraps and ten penalty minutes recorded, but the Gaels were still unable to make a dent on the Gryphons' scoreboard. MacDonald scored his second goal of the evening, deeking out the Gaels' goalie, with an assist from
Nicklas Huard (North Bay, Ont.) at 10:23 in the third period to make the final score 4-0 for the Gryphons, recording Maxwell's second shutout of the season!
Next the Gryphon's travel to Waterloo, Friday at 7:30 night to avenge their loss against them from last month.
