Ice X-Women earn pair of pre-season wins over Tigers

Antigonish, NS – The X-Women hockey team picked up a pair of pre-season victories over the Dalhousie Tigers this weekend in back to back games. Friday night in Halifax the X-Women skated to a convincing 6-1 win, then followed it up with a 6-3 victory on home ice Saturday evening.

STFX finishes with a 3-1 record in pre-season and are set to begin the AUS regular season on Wednesday evening.

On Friday night in Halifax the X-Women outshot the Tigers 30-26 but put more pucks in the back of the net in the 6-1 win.

The teams were tied 1-1 after one as Tigers Autumn Moors and STFX's Kristen Marshall exchanged goals.

STFX scored three unanswered second period goals off the sticks of Ashley Monds, Landyn Pitts, and Kamdyn Switzer. Pitts goal came on the power play as the X-Women outshot the Tigers 13-5 in the middle frame.

Third period X scoring was rounded out by Lacey Dimaulo and Lea MacLeod.

Earning the win between the pipes for STFX was Jamie Johnson who registered 14 saves over the first two periods of play. Freshman goalie Maggie Johnson had 11 saves in the third period.

On Saturday night Amaya Giruadier got to see the action in the X net as she picked up 23 saves in the STFX win.

Her X teammates out the Tigers 38-26 in a game that saw 32 penalty minutes handed out between the two squads.

The penalties resulted in four power play goals being scored in the game, the first one coming from Tigers Isabella Weist four minutes into the first period.

The DAL marker was the only one in the opening frame.

STFX scored three unanswered second period goals to take a 3-1 lead. McKiya Mazur and Maggy Burbidge netted power play goals while Abby Lewis scored on even strength.

Keana Oshowy potted one for Dalhousie late in the period as the score was 4-2 in favour of X after 40 minutes.

Vivian Hinch scored on a blaster for the X-Women 13 minutes into the third period while on the power play.

Mackenzie Drake replied with a DAL goal a minute and a half later as they pulled to 5-3.

Emerson Elliott reinstated the X-Women three-goal lead then Chloe Vukosa closed it out with an empty net goal for the home squad.

Lea MacLeod finished the game with three assists and Lauren Dabrowski had a pair of helpers.

With exhibition competition wrapped up, the X-Women will open AUS regular season play on the road with a game in Halifax Wednesday night against Dalhousie.
