Axewomen clinch 3rd place with 3-1 win over visiting Panthers

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – It only took the first half of scoring by the Acadia Axewomen team to hand the visiting UPEI Panthers a 3-1 loss.

Tight defense and aggressive offensive were key from the onset of the opening half as the Axewomen scored first at the 6-minute mark.

A long kick by senior defender Lauren Jodrey 30 yards out on a neutral zone turnover, caught the upper netting for the first of three Acadia goals.

The Panthers tied the game at 1-1 when Tyffanie Bordage scored a header off of a Lauren Clark corner kick.

First-year striker Brenna Kennedy headed the ball to the back of the net on a cross-kick by teammate Alli Kelly to give the Axewomen a 2-1 lead on the eventual game-winning goal.

The Axewomen closed out the first half with a goal in the closing minutes. Grace Summers insured the win on a penalty kick at the 42nd minute.

Madyson Harris, who was named the Subway Player of the Game, felt as though the week of practice set the Axewomen in a good place for the win after losing to Memorial last weekend.

"This week of training we tried our hardest and gave it our all. We worked on 1v1 and 2v2 all week and today we came out and worked hard for the win," noted Harris.

The Axewomen conclude the 2021 campaign with a 7-3-2 record, three points out of second place. The win today clinches a third-place finish.

The Panthers complete the 2021 season with a 1-6-5 record and not qualifying for the postseason.

A special congratulations to graduating Axewomen Lauren Jodrey, Madicynn Harnish, Jayden Boudreau, Meghan Johnston, McKenzie Kelly, and Jessica Hunt. Best of luck in your future endeavours.
