Axewomen extend streak to three with second win over Capers

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Axewomen basketball team posted a second win in a row against the Cape Breton Capers, this time in Wolfville.

After Friday's close-call win over the Capers, following the fouling out of Elizabeth Beals-Iseyemi and Jayda Veinot in the fourth quarter, this rematch had all starters finish the game.

In today's 89-62 win, Veinot netted 36 points and pulled in 10 rebounds, leading all on the court with 30 plus points for both of this weekend's games against the Capers.

The Axewomen pushed out to a commanding 26-7 lead in the opening quarter with Veinot posting 13 points.

A closer second quarter had Acadia edge the Capers 25-24, but Cape Breton would have to make up a 51-31 deficit in the second half. Kiyara Letlow led the visiting Capers with 11 points after 1 half of play, while Veinot drained 23 points.

The Capers closed the gap early in the second half, closing the Acadia lead to 54-40 on a 9 point run that was paused by Axewoman Samantha Russell's made three. The Capers edged the Axewomen 18-11 in the third quarter.

Acadia's lead grew to a game-high 27 points in the remaining 1:15 of the regulation time, capping off with an 89-62 win.

The Axewomen posted a field goal percentage of 40.4% compared the Cape Breton's 29% from the floor.

The difference was second-chance points and a whopping 60 points in the paint by the Axewomen. Acadia had 17 points from the bench, while the Capers recorded five.

Acadia had eight timely three-point shots that kept the Capers clear of a comeback.

Veinot, who was named the Subway Player of the Game, led all on the court with 31, but teammate Elizabeth Beals-Iseyemi added a respectable 14 points and seven rebounds.

Kiyara Letlow posted a team-high 27 points and 14 rebounds for the Capers. Hannah Smith netted 12 points and Mackenzee Ryan pulled in 10 rebounds including nine defensive.

The Axewomen improve to 7-3 and sit in second place in the AUS standings, tied with Memorial, while the Capers drop to 5-6.

The Axewomen travel to Saint Mary's this Friday to start a back-to-back weekend against Huskies that ends at Acadia on Sunday.
