EDMONTON - After a 16-point loss on Friday, the CIS #4 Alberta Pandas responded in kind, by rebounding with 59-41 victory on Saturday night over the #6 Regina Cougars.
 
With the split, the Pandas earn themselves a 2-2 record, while the defending Canada West champion Cougars pick up their first loss of the season, and see their record diminish to 3-1.

Both teams return to action next weekend as the Pandas hit the road to take on the Brandon Bobcats, while the Cougars return home to face their provincial rivals, and the undefeated Saskatchewan Huskies.
 
The Pandas managed to get points and rebounds from every single player who played more than two minutes, but were led by Andria Carlyon and Kendra Asleson who each finished with nine. Carlyon also had 10 rebounds, which was the game high.
 
Regina got a solid night from Jennilea Coppola as the fourth-year post banked a team high 12 points while also hauling in nine boards. Three other Cougars added six points in the loss.

VICTORIA – The Fraser Valley Cascades completed the weekend sweep with a 77-61 victory over the Victoria Vikes women's basketball team at McKinnon Gym on Saturday.

Sarah Wierks was the leader for the visitors for the second night in a row dominating with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. The Cascades are now 4-0 in the Canada West, while the Vikes fall 1-3.
 
For the Cascades, Wierks was a force with the team's only double-double and logging 28 minutes. Kayle Sartori and Nicole Wierks also hit double digits, each with 14 points on the night, while Kaitlyn Brink added 10. The Cascades were 73 per cent from the line and 43 per cent from the field and out-scored the Vikes in all four quarters.
 
The Cascades completed the weekend sweep with a 77-61 victory to now improve 4-0 in the Canada West, while the Vikes now fall 1-3. Up next the Vikes will hit the road for a pair of games against UBC Okanagan, Nov. 8-9, while the Cascades will host Mount Royal for a double-header.

SASKATOON - The CIS #5 Saskatchewan Huskies got off to a quick start and would maintain their lead throughout the game to defeat the Brandon Bobcats 88-60 Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan improves to 4-0 and sits alone in first place in the Canada West with the win, Brandon drops to 0-4 with the loss.

Kelly Lyons and forward Dalyce Emmerson would both score 19 on the night to lead Saskatchewan. Emmerson recorded a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Cassie Cooke scored a game-high 30 points for the Bobcats on 11-of-25 shooting including a 4-for-8 performance from three-point range. Aleah Bridges added 12 points and three assists.

The Huskies hit the road next weekend to take on provincial rival the Regina Cougars. Brandon returns home to face the Alberta Pandas.

Spartans-Thunderbirds Stats

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds beat the Trinity Western Spartans 65-50 on Saturday night at War Memorial Gym to sweep the two-game weekend series, improving to 3-1 to start the season.
 
The win also marked a personal milestone for UBC head coach Deb Huband, who now has 250 Canada West regular seasons to her credit. She is in her 19th season in charge of the Thunderbirds.

Kris Young led the team with 16 points, with Sidhu, Cassandra Knievel and Maggie Sundberg all scoring in double figures as well. And the ‘Birds scored just 30 points in the paint compared with 58 on Friday.
 
Holy Strom turned in a second straight double double for the Spartans with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kristen Ford had a great stretch of play late off the bench, particularly on the offensive glass, where she grabbed eight of her 10 rebounds.
 
The Spartans fall to 1-3 on the season, and will look to regroup at home next weekend when they host UNBC for two games.
 
The T-Birds are 3-1 after their third straight win. They will try to keep things rolling next weekend in Kamloops when they take on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos completed the sweep of the Winnipeg Wesmen on their home-opener weekend when they defeated the visitors 63-56 on Saturday at Jack Simpson Gym.

Tamara Jarrett had a game-high 20 points on the night while point guard Kristie Shiels added another 14 for the Dinos and Ashley Hirons scored another 10.

For the Wesmen, Stephanie Kleysen led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds. Teammate Megan Noonan scored another 15 and had eight rebounds of her own while Danielle Baril added 11 of her own and grabbed six rebounds.

The Dinos head out to Winnipeg to face the Manitoba Bisons, Nov. 15-16 while the Wesmen will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns that same weekend.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A night after suffering their first loss of the season, the Manitoba Bisons rebounded Saturday night to earn a weekend road split with a 61-53 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Canada West women's basketball action.
 
Stephanie Gill's 17 points for the Bisons led all scorers, while Allison Balasko was the only other Bison to hit double-digits and contributed with 15 points of her own. For the Pronghorns Katlyn Olsen led the way with 15 points and freshman Mariah Miller scored 11 in the losing causet.
 
The loss drops the ‘Horns back to .500 at 2-2 after two consecutive weekend splits to open the season. The Bisons move to 3-1 on the season and will return home to host the Calgary Dinos next weekend. The ‘Horns head out on the road next week, also traveling to Winnipeg to face the Winnipeg Wesmen. PRINCE GEORGE, BC - Jorri Duxbury came out big for the TRU WolfPack to put them ahead of the UNBC Timberwolves 76-72.

The Thompson Rivers WolfPack, now 2-2, defeated the UNBC Timberwolves, now 1-3, on Saturday night at the Northern Sport Centre in Prince George, BC.

The WolfPack were led by Jorri Duxbury, with 26 points, seven boards and three assists. Taiysa Worsfold added 13 points.

Fifth-year trio Emily Kaehn, Jen Bruce and Mercedes VanKoughnett each put up 16 points in the loss.

TRU  will host the UBC Thunderbirds November 15-16 at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops, BC. Games are set for 6 p.m on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

UNBC travels to Langley, BC to take on the Trinity Western Spartans next weekend. The women are scheduled to play Friday, November 15 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, November 16 at 6 p.m.

VANCOUVER – Fourth-year transfer Harleen Sidhu introduced herself to Thunderbirds fans with a huge 31-point, 15-rebound performance in her CIS regular season home debut, propelling UBC to a 77-61 win over the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night at War Memorial Gym.
 
Sidhu went 15-for-22 from the field to set a UBC record for field goals made in a single game, and was a force on the glass at both ends of the court, with seven offensive rebounds and eight defensive to help UBC win the rebounding battle by a +12 margin.
 
Holly Strom continued her solid start to the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds for Trinity Western. Maddie Lougheed and Chantelle Martin each had 10 points.
 
UBC improves to 2-1, while the Spartans fall to 1-2. The teams will clash again on Saturday night at War Memorial to wrap up the weekend series.

VICTORIA - The Victoria Vikes were unable to handle the CIS #3 Fraser Valley Cascades, losing out 68-55, on Friday at McKinnon Gym.

The visitors were powered by fourth-year forward Sarah Wiercks who had a 21-point game as the Cascades are now 3-0, while the Vikes fall to a 1-2 record.

Third-year Jessica Renfrew did all she could for the home team adding a team-high 18 points and five rebounds, while Jenna Bugiardini chipped in for 13 points. Shaylyn Crisp added 12 points and was seven-for-eight from the line, while the Vikes were held 32 per cent from the field.

The Cascades are now a perfect 3-0 in the Canada West, while the Vikes drop 1-2. Both teams will re-match on Saturday at 5 p.m. Both games will be broadcast with live video and stats at http://canadawest.tv.

EDMONTON - The Alberta Pandas lost their way in the second quarter, and it cost them big time as they dropped a 74-58 decision to the CIS #6 Regina Cougars on Friday at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

The loss drops the #4 Pandas to 1-3 on the season, while Regina remains undefeated at 3-0.

Alberta was led by Megan Van de Kraats' 16 points and seven rebounds and guard Renee Byrne had 10 points in the loss.

The Cougars, defending Canada West champions, were paced by Megan Chamberlin's game-high 18 points, as she shot seven for seven from the field and four for five from the charity stripe. Former Panda and 2008-09 Canada West Rookie of the Year Nicole Clarke picked up 15 points in the win, including 12 off three-pointers.

The two squads will clash again on Saturday night, this time tipping off at 5:00 pm, in the Saville Community Sports Centre.

SASKATOON - Despite trailing for most of the game, the No. 5 University of Saskatchewan Huskies found their scoring touch in the fourth quarter to defeat the visiting Brandon Universty Bobcats 83-73 Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

The Huskies move to 3-0 on the season, while Brandon drops to 0-3 with the loss.

Dalyce Emmerson led offence for the third straight game to open the season pouring in 19 points. Riley Humbert and Antoinette Miller added 12 and 11, respectively.

Canada West scoring leader Cassie Cooke scored 20 for the Bobcats in the loss. Stephanie Hanes scored 16 more for the Bobcats.

The teams meet again on Saturday at the PAC. The game can be seen live on canadawest.tv.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – In a defensive battle, the Lethbridge Pronghorns prevailed in their 2013-14 home opener with a 59-54 over the Manitoba Bisons.
 
Coming off a career-high 30 points last Saturday, post Kim Veldman led the way for the ‘Horns recording her second consecutive double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Katlyn Olsen was the only other Pronghorn to hit double digits and chipped in with 11 points.

For the Bisons Sheree Camona-Galdamez led the way with 13 points and Robyn Eyer contributed 10 in a losing cause.
 
With the win, the ‘Horns improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Bisons suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 2-1.
 
The weekend series between the ‘Horns and Bisons will wrap up tomorrow night, with tip-off set for 5:00pm at the 1st Choice Savings Centre and the game will also be streamed on http://canadawest.tv

CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos won their first game of the season on Friday when they defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 64-59 in their home opener.

Forward Lawrie Saunders led the way for Calgary with 13 points and eight rebounds. Point guard Kristie Shiels also hit double digits with 10 points and six assists. Jessica Thielen continued to dominate down low as she grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Dinos.

For the Wesmen, Megan Noonan scored a game-high 20 points. Stephanie Kleysen added 16 more along with nine rebounds. Alyssa Grant rounded out the scoring with 10 points.

Both teams will go at it again tomorrow at the Jack. Tip-off is once again set for 6 p.m.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars defated the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday night by a score of 73-70.

Jordan MacLean led all scorers with 22 points while India Ashboth was second on the team with 17. Sarah Allison led the Heat with 20 and Tia Sadler added 14 points.  

Mount Royal now holds a record of 1-3. The Heat are now 1-3.

The UBC Okanagan Heat will return home next weekend to play a two game set against the Victoria Vikes on Friday November 15th.

The Cougars will hit the road and head to Abbottsford next weekend where they will take on the play Fraser Valley in a two game series starting on Friday, November 15th.

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The UNBC Timberwolves notched their first win during their home opener on Friday. The Timberwolves move to 1-2 after defeating the Thompson River WolfPack 73-53. The WolfPack also sit at 1-2.

The Timberwolves were led by fifth year Jen Bruce, who netted 17, a game high so far this season. Mercedes VanKoughnett was also key for the T-Wolves. The fifth year guard nabbed 14 rebounds, 12 of which were defensive.

Taiysa Worsfold drained five threes to add to her game total of 22, a high for both teams. Jori Duxbury chipped in 11 points.

The win marked the first regular season win for the Timberwolves and the first win for head coach Sergey Shchepotkin who is in his first season at the helm of the Timberwolves.

Both teams will return to the Northern Sport Centre on Saturday for their second of two games. The game is set to tip-off at 6 p.m. and can be viewed on canadawest.tv.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougar's home opener was spoiled by the UBC-Okanagan Heat who came into Kenyon Court and beat the Cougars 80-73. Sarah Allison (16 pts) and Emily Kanester (15 pts) were the top scorers for the Heat. Alicia Tan had a game high 22 points while Danica Rybachuk and Jordan MacLean had 16 points each.

The Cougars came out flying as they took the game to the Heat early and gained an early lead. After some push back from the Heat the score ended up tied at 18 after the first quarter. Some strong play from Mount Royal's Alicia Tan and their sharpshooter Danica Rybachuk put the Cougars back on top at the half. Mount Royal led 40-37 going into the break.

UBC-Okanagan's players must have received a talking to during the break because they came out on fire in the third quarter. Their top scorers from last weekend came alive and claimed the lead for the Heat. After three quarters of play the Heat led 57-53. The Cougars then began to force shots and started turning the ball over leading to easy points for the Heat. The final score when the game concluded was 80-73 for the Heat.  

Mount Royal now holds a record of 0-3 and the Heat improves to 1-2.

These two teams will play the second half of their series on Friday, 6:00 p.m. at Kenyon Court.
