Ridgebacks show perseverance in overtime win

OSHAWA, Ont. – Three out of four, that is how many points the Ontario Tech University men's hockey team will leave Montreal with after their 3-2 overtime win Saturday evening over the Concordia Stingers.

This was a game in which the Ridgebacks never held a lead and twice came back from being down a goal. Not even 24 hours after giving up three unanswered goals to McGill and falling in overtime, the Ridgebacks showed great fight after a slow start to the game.

The teams exchanged periods in which they dominated, as the host Stingers controlled much of the first, but came out with a 1-1 tie. The Ridgebacks however, controlled the middle frame and were left disappointed trailing 2-1. Although the score was not in their favour Ontario Tech remained positive and continued to push for the equalizer, which came just minutes after a big penalty kill.

Entering the extra frame, the Ridgebacks were determined to avoid the previous nights result. Both teams had quality chances for the win, but it was ultimately the visitors that claimed victory in the back half of the three-on-three period.

Ontario Tech is set to host UQTR for a weekend back-to-back with the first game going next Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre.

  • Colin Grannary opened the scoring at 3:52 of the first on the power play, while Alexandre Gosselin gave the home team the 2-1 lead at 16:25 of the middle frame.
Jordan Ross (Kronau, Sask.) evened the game 1-1 at 11:14 of the first, after his backhander found a hole in the netminder.
Jack Patterson (Bedford, N.S.) scored at 12:08 of the third, tying the game 2-2 when he banged home a loose puck in front, after a great forecheck from Sean Ross (Bracebridge, Ont.).
Matthieu Gomercic (Winnipeg, Man.) won the game at 4:47 on overtime, taking Patterson's drop pass in the slot and rifling the shot by the goalie.   Leif Hertz (Kingston, Ont.) allowed two goals on 26 shots throughout 64:47 minutes of play time.
• Sebastien Lefebvre faced 31 shots and stopped 28.
  Overall Record: 8-9-1
