Fredericton, NB – The STFX X-Women played to a 5-2 victory over the St. Thomas Tommies Friday night at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

STFX jumped to an early start, finding the back of the net 26 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Maggy Burbidge (Falmouth, NS) took a backhand shot that flipped over Tommies' goalie Caroline Pietroski (Etobicoke, ON).

The X-Women went on to score four more times in the period, while the Tommies would get one from rookie Amy Dvernichuk (Regina, SK) after a scramble in front of the net, seeing multiple Tommies whack at the puck before it was buried.

The opening period saw goals also came from Anna MacCara (Yellowknife, NWT) who scored twice in the period and Lauren Dabrowski (Tiny, ON).

Pietroski was pulled from the game early on after allowing four goals on 11 shots. Katie Sweeney (Tecumseh, ON) replaced her, making her first appearance of the season.

After a high scoring period, the second felt calm as no one was able to find the back of the net despite three powerplay chances - two for the Tommies and one for the X-Women.

It wasn't until 25 seconds into the final period that one capitalized on a chance, as Emma Wilson (Midhurst, ON) put the puck past the goal line to split the lead in half, making it 4-2 for STFX.

STU got another powerplay chance late in the third period and pressed the X-Women, but that turned into an X-Women breakaway where Chloe Vukosa (Mississauga, ON) put it past Sweeney shorthanded for the final goal of the game.

The Tommeis fall to 2-1 on the season, while the X-Women are now 2-0. Their next game is Oct. 15 in Charlottetown against the UPEI Panthers, while the Tommies play at home again Sunday against Dalhousie.
