
Carleton women take second straight FISU America 3x3 basketball crown, Victoria men finish fourth
The Carleton women’s basketball team has won its second straight FISU America 3x3 basketball championship, following a 21-14 win over the Universidad de Chile in today’s gold medal game in Brasilia, Brazil. With the win, the Ravens automatically qualify for the 2025 FISU 3x3 Basketball World Cup, set for later this fall.
The Carleton team, consisting ofTatyanna Burke (Winona, Ont./Cardinal Newman Secondary), Jacqueline Urban (Ancaster, Ont./Lincoln Prep), Kyana-Jade Poulin (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) and Dorcas Buisa (Gatineau, Que./Heritage College) went undefeated in six games over the three-day event.
On Thursday, Carleton cruised through the round-robin phase, posting wins of 19-10 over the Universidad Cooperatif de Colombia, 17-5 over the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua of Mexico and 18-8 over the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras.
The Ravens advanced to the semifinals with a 22-12 win over the Universidad Nacional de la Matanza of Argentina on Friday. They advanced to the championship game on Saturday morning with a 21-7 win over the Universidad del Azuay of Ecuador before completing their undefeated run later in the day.
On the men’s side, the Victoria Vikes finished in fourth place, as they went 4-2 over the three-day event. The team of Shadynn Smid (Duncan, B.C./Cowichan Secondary), Griffin Arnatt (Victoria, B.C./Oak Bay Secondary), Ethan Boag (Victoria, B.C./Claremont Secondary) and Renoldo Robinson (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) went undefeated through Thursday’s round-robin phase. They started with a nailbiting 21-20 win over UniP of Brazil, cruised to a 22-6 win over the Universidad Nacional de la Matanza of Argentina and hit a buzzer beater to force overtime and came out on top 16-14 (OT) against San Sebastián of Chile.
In Friday’s quarterfinal, the Vikes cruised to a 22-9 win over Uniniltonlins of Brazil. On Saturday morning, the Vikes suffered a heartbreaking 21-19 defeat to the Universidad de Puerto Rico, the eventual tournament champions. The Vikes fell to the Universidad de Chile 21-18 in the bronze medal game to finish fourth in their first appearance at the event.
The event served as a qualifier for the FISU 3x3 World Cup, with the Carleton women and Puerto Rico men gaining automatic entry into this fall’s finals.
