
Lois and Doug Mitchell Awards: Marie-Frédérique Poulin and Philippe Morneau-Cartier named finalists from the RSEQ
Philippe Morneau-Cartier and Marie-Frédérique Poulin, both runners for the Laval Rouge et Or, are the Quebec conference nominees for the Lois and Doug Mitchell Awards, awarded to the U SPORTS athletes of the year.
Marie-Frédérique Poulin, Laval track and field
A master’s student in public health from Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Poulin was dominant at the 2025 Quebec conference championship. She picked up three gold medals, as recorded a time of 38.90 seconds in the 300 metres, won the 600 metres with a time of 1:30.67 and anchored the winning Laval team in the 4x400-metre relay.
At the U SPORTS championships in Windsor in March, the fifth-year runner won a bronze medal in the 600 metres with a time of 1:29.48 and picked up a second bronze as she anchored Laval in the 4x200-metre relay.
Earlier in the season, Poulin, who transferred to Laval from the University of Delaware two years ago, established a program record in the 300 metres and led Laval to relay wins at the Sherbrooke and McGill invitational meets.
Capping her season, Poulin named the Athlete of the Year and the Individual Sport Athlete of the Year in the female sport category.
Philippe Morneau-Cartier, Laval cross country
A master’s student in biomedical clinical sciences from La Pocatière, Quebec., Morneau-Cartier dominated U SPORTS cross country in 2024. He won all four races he entered, including the U SPORTS championship.
Morneau-Cartier, who is in his fourth year, started the season by winning the Carleton open event in Ottawa, finishing the 6-kilometre course in a time of 18:14, 39 seconds ahead of the nearest U SPORTS competitor. At the Rouge et Or Classic in Quebec City, an 8km race, he posted a time of 24:34 and was 22 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.
At the Quebec conference championship in Vaudreuil-Dorion, he again won, this time running the 8-km course in a time of 24:28. He continued his dominance at the U SPORTS Championship in Kelowna, he won the individual gold medal with a time of 23:19, six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from UNB. He helped Laval to a national bronze medal in the team event.
Capping his season, Morneau-Cartier named the Athlete of the Year and the Individual Sport Athlete of the Year in the male sport category.

Poulin and Morneau-Cartier join Gage Grassic of Saskatchewan, Nate Petrone of Calgary, Alliyah Rowe of Cape Breton and DJ Jackson of STFX as finalists for the Lois and Doug Mitchell Awards for the U SPORTS Athletes of the Year. The winner will be announced on Monday, June 2 at a ceremony in Collingwood, Ont. U SPORTS will profile the OUA nominees on Thursday.
