CHARLOTTETOWN (CIS) – The Fraser Valley Cascades used a strong 2nd half, taking advantage of a strong tail wind to generate a 2-0 victory over the Laval Rouge and Or in the 2nd quarter-final of the CIS 2010 Women’s soccer Championship.
The first semi final on Saturday is set now with Queen’s taking on Fraser Valley at 1:00pm(AST). Cape Breton will face Laval tomorrow at 1:00pm in the consolation semi final.
During the second quarter final, teams played an uneventful 1st half with few opportunities and most of the action between the 18 yard boxes. Laval keeper Audrey Letourneau made the play of the half, coming off her line to stymie player of the game for the Cascades Carly Neeson who was in alone in the 30th minute.
UFC opened the scoring in the 65th minute when freshmen Caitlin Blondin beat Letourneau cleanly on a free kick from the left side. Another freshmen, Danielle deBruin put the game away in the 85th minute, scoring from the top of the box when a clearing attempt off a Cascade corner was unsuccessful.
Laval seldom threatened during the match having their best chances around the 73rd minute. They sailed a shot over the crossbar, then had a fee kick bounce off the far post.
UFV coach Rob Giesbrecht noted, “It was a good day for the rookies as Neeson, Blondin and deBruin are all in their 1st season. We defended well, the conditions were tough today, both with the wind in our face and at our back.”
The Cascades have surprised many experts by coming out on top in the ultra-competitive Canada West conference and advancing here this weekend for their first time since coming into the CIS in 2006. Before defeating UBC in the conference final, Fraser Valley eliminated two-time defending CIS champion Trinity Western with a dramatic 3-2 semifinal victory on penalty kicks.
