TORONTO (CIS) – Fourth-year midfielder Erica Basso scored the game-winning goal in the 56th minute as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the UPEI Panthers 2-0 in the consolation final at the CIS women’s soccer championship at Varsity Centre.

With the win, the host Varsity Blues complete their first national tournament appearance with a fifth-place finish and a record of 2-1.

Having finished tied for fifth in their only other appearance in 2004, the UPEI Panthers end their second CIS championship tournament at 1-2 and move to 1-3-1 overall.

A native of King City, Ont., Basso tipped a shot from first-year Blues striker Arin King (Pickering, Ont.) to beat UPEI goalkeeper and player of the game Chanelle Roy (Bathurst, N.B.).

UPEI was awarded a corner kick in the 90th minute of the match and looked as though they might tie the game with all 11 players in the 18-yard box, however, Toronto defenders cleared the ball to third-year midfielder Laura Machado (Mississauga, Ont.) who rushed down the field and added an insurance marker into an empty Panthers’ net.

Toronto dominated the entire contest, outshooting PEI 20-2. First-year striker Jessica Fantozzi of Richmond Hill, Ont. was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for her solid play on the ball movement and consistent pressure in the offensive zone.

Other notable scoring chances came in the 50th minute when fifth-year Blues veteran Heidi Borgmann of Mississauga, Ont. came running down the left side and rang a hard shot off the crossbar. Just 10 minutes later Borgmann sent a beautiful cross to Nicole Burling (Scarborough, Ont.) who hit the post.
