TORONTO (CIS) – The University of Victoria Vikes defeated the Guelph Gryphons 6-0 in the bronze-medal game of the 40th CIS-FHC field hockey championship Sunday afternoon at U of T’s Back Campus Fields.
Victoria caps off their 33rd national championship appearance with a seventh CIS bronze medal in program history. The Vikes end Guelph’s four-year bronze-medal run as the OUA silver medalists drop to 4-4 in the third-place game.
First-year forward Stefanie Langkammer of Duncan, B.C., scored two goals, including the game-winner in the second minute of the game, to lead the Vikes to victory.
“It feels awesome,” said Langkammer after the game. “Our team was really determined and having no goals against feels really good. Of course we would have preferred to be in the gold medal game, but coming out on a high note feels great.”
Shortly after Langkammer’s opening goal, 2014 CIS all-Canadian Amanda Kurianowicz found the back of the net to give Victoria an early 2-0 lead. Third-year midfielder Mei Lin Cheung added another in the 25th minute and the Canada West silver medalists took a 3-0 lead into the half.
Langkammer notched her second of the game in the 50th minute off a corner opportunity. Both Kathleen Leahy and Andrea Jones rounded out the scoring with goals off of penalty corners in the 58th and 63rd minutes, respectively.
The Gryphons end their eighth consecutive national championship appearance with an 0-4 record.
“Every game we played we had a goal against us in the first five minutes and that can’t happen,” said Gryphons head coach Michelle Turley. “It gives the other team the momentum right from the start. They scored three goals really quickly and we weren’t on our game plan whatsoever. In the second half we played better, but we needed to start the game that way.”
