ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS athletes of the week (#2): Acadia’s Earle, Cape Breton’s Maheu honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer players Meghan Earle from Acadia University and Justin Maheu from Cape Breton University are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 13, 2015.

Earle, a third-year kinesiology student from Mount Pearl, Nfld., scored five goals in two contests, including both game-winners, as the Axewomen kicked off conference play with a 6-0 home win over Saint Mary's and a 6-1 defeat of Dalhousie in Halifax. In last Friday's season opener, the 5-foot-8 striker netted her team's first four goals as Acadia built a 5-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Then on Sunday, Earle broke a 1-1 tie in the first minute of the second half before assisting on the insurance marker three minutes later.

Sherbrooke soccer player Audrey Lagarde, Wilfrid Laurier rugby player Chloe Graves and Winnipeg soccer player Danielle Bulloch were also nominated for the women's award.

Maheu, a third-year community studies student from Ottawa, also opened his AUS campaign with five goals in two outings, including a hat-trick in a 5-1 upset of defending conference champion UNB and a pair in a 6-0 shutout against visiting Moncton. On Friday, the reigning CIS player of the year tallied the game-winner in the 19th minute and found the back of the net twice more in the 42nd and 71st minutes as the Capers dominated the Varsity Reds, who were ranked fourth nationally heading into the confrontation. On Sunday, the prolific striker, who a year ago led AUS with 15 goals, struck twice in the first 11 minutes of the second half to seal the victory over the Aigles Bleus.
