OTTAWA (CIS) – Saskatchewan basketball player Troy Gottselig is the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport male athlete of the week for the period ending March 21, 2010.
Gottselig, a fifth-year education major from Findlater, Sask., received the Jack Donohue trophy as MVP of the CIS championship last weekend in Ottawa after he led the fifth-seeded Huskies to the first national title in team history. The 6-foot-8 forward scored in double figures in each of Saskatchewan’s three victories over higher-ranked opponents. He tallied 10 points and eight rebounds in a 71-68 win against No. 4 Windsor in the opening round, had 13 points and four boards in an 86-82 upset of No. 1 and defending national champion Carleton in the semifinals, and wrapped up his university career with a 22-point, eight-rebound performance in a 91-81 gold-medal triumph over No. 3 UBC.
Carleton basketball player Kevin McCleery was also up for the award.
