OSRBLIE, Slovakia (CIS) – Canadian biathletes were competing in their second event of the 2015 Winter Universiade on Tuesday and Keely MacCulloch of Calgary once again posted the best result for the red and white contingent.
The biathlon and Nordic skiing events of the 27th FISU Winter Games take place in Slovakia until Feb. 1st, while all other competitions will be staged in Granada, Spain from Feb. 3 to 14.
MacCulloch, who finished 37th in the women’s 15-kilometre on Sunday, placed 40th in the 7.5 km sprint with a score of 25:04.7. The University of Alberta Augustana Campus student ended the race three spots ahead of teammate Jessica Paterson, a U of A student from St. Albert, Alta., who registered a time of 26:04.0.
In the men’s 10 km sprint, Reagan Mills, a UPEI student from Truro, N.S., was the top Canuck in 29:28.2, good for 48th position. He was followed at the finish line by University of Saskatchewan student Evan Girard of Oxbow, Sask., who was 51st in 30:27.1; Sasha Eccleston of Hinton, Alta. (U of A – Augustana), who was 54th in 30:40.5; and Sam West of Grand Prairie, Alta. (UNBC), who placed 56th with a score of 33:32.3.
Olympians Paulina Fialkova of Slovakia (20:20.8) and Iaroslav Ivanov of Russia (23:17.3) captured the women’s and men’s gold medals, respectively.
The Universiade biathlon competition resumes Wednesday with the women’s and men’s pursuits (10 km / 12.5 km).

About the Winter Universiade
The Winter Universiade is a biennial international multi-sport
event open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28
years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participants
must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution
(university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a
post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.
The Granada Universiade will feature nine compulsory sports and one
optional sport. Compulsory sports: alpine skiing, biathlon, ice
hockey, curling, nordic skiing, short track speed skating, figure
skating, synchronized skating, snowboarding. Optional sport:
freestyle skiing.
NOTE: Biathlon and nordic skiing will take place in Strbske Pleso
and Osrblie, Slovakia from Jan. 24 to Feb. 1, prior to the start of
the Games in Granada.
