CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#8): Western women’s hockey, UBC men’s soccer move up to No. 1

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning champion Western Mustangs are the new team to beat in CIS women's hockey, while in men's soccer, the UBC Thunderbirds join the UQAM Citadins atop the national rankings.

In other CIS sports, the Guelph Gryphons (women's and men's cross country / women's rugby), Alberta Golden Bears (men's hockey), Laval Rouge et Or (women's soccer), UBC Okanagan Heat (women's volleyball) and McMaster Marauders (men's volleyball) all maintain their pole position.

In women's hockey, the No. 1 ranking is the first in program history for the Mustangs, who captured their first CIS title last winter thanks to a resounding 5-0 over powerhouse McGill in the championship final. Western (2-1-0) enjoyed a break in its OUA schedule last weekend but still moves past Montreal (1-1-0) in the second coaches' poll of the season after the Carabins were upset 2-1 on home ice by Concordia in their league opener, Friday night.

In men's soccer, UBC (9-0-1) joins UQAM (7-0-1) atop the rankings after spending three straight weeks at No. 2 behind the Citadins. The Thunderbirds were impressive last weekend in a pair of road wins against Thompson Rivers, 3-0, and UBC Okanagan, 6-0, while the Citadins edged archrival Montreal 2-1 in their lone outing.

NOTE: The first CIS rankings of the season in basketball will be released on Nov. 3.
