CIS Top Ten Tuesday (#10): McGill moves up to No. 1 in women’s hockey

OTTAWA (CIS) – The McGill University Martlets are the new team to beat in CIS women’s hockey. McGill moves up one spot in the fifth national coaches’ poll of the season, while the reigning champion Calgary Dinos drop to No. 2 after holding the pole position for four weeks.
The only other change at the top in this week’s CIS rankings sees Calgary take over from Montreal in women’s swimming.

In other sports, Guelph (women’s & men’s cross country), Saskatchewan (men’s hockey), Toronto (men’s swimming), Windsor (women’s basketball), Carleton (men’s basketball), Trinity Western (women’s volleyball) and Alberta (men’s volleyball) all maintain their No. 1 status.

In women’s hockey, the Martlets improved to 6-0 in conference play over the weekend thanks to a 4-1 win over previously undefeated and fourth-ranked Montreal (5-1) and a 4-0 shutout against Ottawa.

Meanwhile out West, the Dinos (8-1-1) suffered their second loss of the campaign - their first in regulation – last Friday, a 4-2 setback against No. 3 Alberta (8-2-0). The defending CIS champs quickly got back on their feet however as they blanked their provincial rivals 1-0 in Saturday’s rematch.

In cross country, Guelph heads to Saturday’s CIS championships in London, Ont., as the overwhelming favourite to once again claim the women’s and men’s team banners. The Gryphons have captured the last seven national titles in women’s competition and have won six consecutive men’s championships, both CIS record streaks.
