Gee-Gees complete comeback against Sherbrooke
On Saturday afternoon, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team faced off against the Université de Sherbrooke Vert et Or at Montpetit Hall. Ottawa had a tough start to the game but made a comeback to take the two points (18-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 16-14) and move into a tie with Sherbrooke for fourth in the RSEQ standings.
The final meeting of the regular season between the two teams started slow for the Gee-Gees as Sherbrooke opened up a ten point lead in the first set. “That match is the whole season,” explained Gee-Gees head coach Lionel Woods. “It was a little bit inconsistent, we started out a little bit slow. But we turned the corner right away in the second set. We battled all the way through.” The Gee-Gees were down 10-13 in the final set before applying pressure on the attack and winning the set 16-14. Sherbrooke’s Sarah-J. Meunier was stellar on the attack with 22 kills.
A big contributor to Ottawa’s win on Saturday was second year Kara Hayes. “Kara struggled early,” commented Woods. “She turned her game around and became our best hitter. As she improved, we improved, and I thought that was a big deal.” Kara had 16 kills, just two behind teammate Kaly Soro, and finished the game with a hitting percentage of .324. She also scored three service aces in the match.
The Gee-Gees finish their regular season matchups against Sherbrooke with a 2-2 record. Their next game will be on Sunday afternoon in Montreal against the McGill Martlets.
