Brown Wins 600m At SMU Open

(HALIFAX, NS) A small group of Varsity Reds Track and Field Team athletes took part in the 2017 SMU Open, in Halifax on Saturday.

Victoria LeBlanc(Saint John, NB) continued her record setting ways in the long jump, establishing a new school record with a jump of 5.36 metres, taking second place in the competition overall but first out of university competitors. It was the third time this season LeBlanc has pushed the UNB long jump record to a new mark.

LeBlanc is now ranked first in Atlantic University Sport heading into the conference championships.

LeBlanc also competed in the women's 300-metres, running 43.03s, finishing 7th overall and 5th out of university competitors.

Daniel Brown(Hampton, NB) won the men's 600-metres in a time of 1:23.26s, beating the second-place finisher, Shiloh Johnson from Dalhousie, by nearly a second. While Johnson currently leads Brown by 0.01s for top spot in the AUS rankings, Brown's victory shows that he is in good form to defend his AUS title. Brown followed up his 600m victory with 8th place in the 300-metres, in a time of 37.16s.

Also competing for the Varsity Reds were Artabaz Nazari(Saint John, NB), who finished 6th in the men's 60-metres with a time of 7.18s, and Kyle Lefort(Cheticamp, NS), who finished 3rd in the high jump, out of university athletes, clearing 1.75 metres.

"I am pleased with the results from the meet," said Varsity Reds head coach Jason Reindl. "We had another school record this week and came away with some victories which gives us all confidence that we'll be ready to compete at the AUS championships, which are now less than two weeks away."

So far this season, Varsity Reds track and field athletes have established 15 new UNB records.
