MONCTON, N.B -In Saturday's opening quarter-final of the 2013 Subway AUS women's soccer championship, the top-seeded Cape Breton Capers edged the UPEI Panthers by a score of 1-0 to advance to Sunday's championship final.

The Capers' undefeated regular season earned them a bye into this semi-final matchup of the Subway AUS women's soccer championship.

Coming off their solid defensive win in the quarter-final match-up versus the Memorial Sea-Hawks, a well-supported UPEI Panthers team looked to continue their counter-attacking play against the top-seeded Capers.

The Capers, the more dangerous team in the first half, found themselves frustrated by the hard-working Panthers who often managed to scramble the ball out of their own box.

Corners were particularly dangerous for the Panthers with the Capers showing good strength and power in the air, but lacking the finishing touch.

The first 20 minutes of the second half saw Allison Bell-Davies (Pickering, Ont.) hit the post and the Panthers' miss on two good chances, one coming off a corner.

Robbyn McNeill (Kentville, N.S.) recorded the only goal of the game in the 68th minute off a penalty kick.

Tiffany O'Donnell (Cole Harbour, N.S.) recorded the shutout for the Capers.

Defender Kim Brown (Lantzville, B.C.) was named the Subway Player of the Game for the UPEI Panthers putting in a solid defensive performance. Second-year midfielder Kara Mackinnon (Sydney, N.S.) earned Subway Player of the Game honours for the Capers.

Cape Breton will now take their shot at winning AUS championship banner against the winner of Saturday's second semifinal (Dalhousie vs. Acadia), tomorrow at 2 p.m., in the Subway AUS championship final game.

MONCTON, N.B. – Today in Subway AUS women's soccer championship semi-final action, the two-time defending AUS champion Dalhousie Tigers faced the third-ranked Acadia Axewomen. Both teams were vying for the chance to take on the Cape Breton Capers in tomorrow's championship game. The Capers secured their own spot in the final earlier in the day with a win over the UPEI Panthers.

Acadia caused trouble down the right flank early in the game through good runs from Talisa Silzer (Saskatoon, Sask.) and hold up play from Meghan Earle (Mount Pearl, N.L.). The two combined on several occasions, but with nothing to show for it, the score remained tied at zero at halftime.

It took 57 minutes for the first goal to come, but it did not disappoint. Kathleen Ross (Bedford, N.S.) scored a free-kick screamer from 35 yards out, the climax of a period of good pressure from the Axewomen.

After going down a goal, the Tigers pushed numbers forward and controlled the game for a prolonged period. Their goal finally came in the form of a Victoria Parkinson (Halifax, N.S.) finish after a back heel from Eunnie Kim (Halifax, N.S.). Parkinson's performance would ultimately earn her Subway Player of the Game honours for the Tigers.

With the score tied 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, the teams entered overtime.

The game-winning goal came at the end of the first overtime half. Earle finished a great pass over the top of the defence with a deft chip. Her contributions would earn her Subway Player of the Game honours for the Axewomen.

Acadia will now take on Cape Breton tomorrow in the Subway AUS women's soccer championship final at 2 p.m at Rocky Stone Field in Moncton.

UBC 0 Victoria 1 Final - PK Home
Canada West bronze

by Angelina Amlani

VICTORIA – Graduating senior goalkeeper Tanya Jones delivered in net to bring home the bronze for her UVic Vikes who defeated the UBC Thunderbirds with a 3-1 edge on penalty kicks in the Canada West women's soccer championship final.

In her last university career game, Jones made two huge saves in penalty kicks to secure the bronze medal for her team on a soggy and windy Saturday night in Victoria. Flawless in regulation time, Jones allowed just one goal in the penalty kicks.

With the game scoreless at the end of regulation time, both teams prepared their senior players for penalty kicks (in the Canada West bronze medal match, teams do not play extra time).

The Vikes would come out with the win in penalties after Jones shutout UBC senior Frazao and freshman Aman Shergill.

VICTORIA – Canada West MVP senior forward Julia Ignacio scored the game-winning goal five minutes into extra time, as the Alberta Pandas won their eighth Canada West women's soccer banner 2-1 over the defending CIS and Canada West champion Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday night.

The win marks Alberta's first Canada West title since 2001. They now set their sights on a CIS banner, looking for their fourth in school history, beginning Thursday in Toronto. The defending national champion Spartans will also attend the CIS tournament as the Canada West runner-up.

In the 95th minute at Centennial Stadium, Ignacio headed the ball into the net converting a great cross from two yards out by Paula Dadensky, banking it off the cross bar past Spartans goalkeeper Rachel Bedek, who was helpless on the play.

The Pandas will be the higher seeded Canada West squad for nationals as conference champions.

In time added on in the second half, Biggs came out to slide and knock the ball away on a dangerous Trinity Western scoring chance from fifth-year senior midfielder Natalie Boyd of Surrey, B.C., extending the game to extra time.

After Ignacio's goal five minutes into the first extra-time half, the Spartans desperately tried to tie the match. In the final three minutes of extra time, Caitlin Haines was robbed by Biggs, and the Spartans pressured the Pandas throughout the final minutes but could not equalize.
