WATERLOO, Ont. (Oct. 4, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks
women's soccer team was looking to recover from a two game winless
streak, their longest of the season, Friday evening when they
hosted the Waterloo Warriors. The Hawks would get the win and then
some as they cruised to a 5-0 victory thanks to a very special
offensive performance.
The Hawks wasted no time ensuring they got on the board with Emily
Brown of Waterloo, Ont., netting her fifth goal of the season
at the seven minute mark of the game. That was just a taste for
Brown who would go on to add markers in the 20th and 43rd minutes
to send the Hawks into the half with a three goal advantage over
the Warriors.
In the second half it quickly became apparent that Brown intended
to repeat her OUA top goal scorer performance from last season in a
single game as she added two more early in the half to give the
Hawks their final tally of five. With her performance, Brown set a
Golden Hawks record for most goals in a single game and vaults
herself into second place in the OUA scoring race. The previous
record of four goals was set by Tammy Scurr of Kitchener, Ont.,
back in 2003 against these same Warriors.
Earning the shutout for the Hawks was keeper Maggie
Carmichael of Orono, Ont., who faced four shots in the
game.
Laurier will now look to Sunday when they host the Windsor Lancers.
Windsor dealt the Hawks one of their two losses this season and the
purple and gold will be out looking to return the favour to the
Lancers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at University Stadium.

RMC 0 at Queen’s 8
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 2, 2013) - In their second straight 8-0
win, the No. 7 Gaels bested the RMC Paladins at the West Campus
Field on Wednesday night.
Breanna
Burton (Ottawa) opened the floodgates in the
17th minute, when she took a pass from Rachel
Radu (Ottawa) in stride, stepped around Paladins keeper
Emily Barnard, and buried the ball into the empty net. Chipping the
keeper from 25 yards out, Radu got a goal of her own in the
20th minute. Burton added another first-half tally,
tapping in a cross from Jennifer
Siu (London, Ont.) in the 34th minute.
Riley
Filion (Alexandria, Ont.) finished another Siu cross to
make it 4-0 at halftime, and netted another early in the second
frame, giving her five goals in her last two games.
The Paladins' best chance came in the 72nd minute, after
the referee called a handball against Alex
Blanchard (North Vancouver, B.C.) inside the Gaels 18-yard
box, giving RMC a penalty kick. Rhianna Koopman's attempt missed
the left post by inches.
The Gaels finished the game with a pair of goals from Monique
Czaczkowski (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and a last-minute blast
from Brittany
Almeida (Elginburg, Ont.).
On Homecoming weekend, the Gaels (6-1-3) host the No. 1 Ottawa
Gee-Gees (8-0-2) on the West Campus Field at noon on Saturday.

Western 4 at Windsor 0
WINDSOR, Ont. – Goals from four different players helped the
Western Mustangs women's soccer team continue their unbeaten season
with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Windsor Lancers on Wednesday
night.
With the win the Mustangs remain in first place in the OUA West and
improve to 6-0-4 on the season while the Lancers fall to 4-4-2. It
was also Western's second win of the year against Windsor as the
Mustangs posted a 6-0 victory at TD Stadium on the season's opening
weekend.
Lauren Winquist, Amanda Boyle, Sarah Deakin and Aoi Ichiyama
contributed the offence in the win with Tori Edgar recording her
sixth shutout of the season.
Winquist put Western on the scoreboard early in the first half
netting a goal at the 13-minute mark. Before the break Boyle
increased the Mustangs lead as she racked up the second goal of the
game and her fifth of the season to make it 2-0 Western heading
into the break.
The Mustangs momentum continued into the second half and Deakin
added Western's third goal of the game at the 57-minute mark.
Ichiyama followed up just four minutes later with a fourth
consecutive Western goal, giving the team a 4-0 advantage over the
Lancers. Despite Windsor's best efforts to respond, the Lancer's
were unable to sneak past the strong Mustangs defence, and the game
concluded with a 4-0 shutout victory for Western.
The Mustangs will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 6, at 1:00 p.m. as
they travel to Guelph to face-off against the Gryphons.

Wesmen-Spartans
Stats
by Mark Janzen, TWU Sports Information
LANGLEY, BC – The Trinity Western Spartans
extended its undefeated streak to five games with a 5-0 win over
Winnipeg Friday at Rogers Field.
Hosting the Wesmen for the first time since Winnipeg's women's
soccer team joined the Canada West conference last year, TWU
(3-1-3) proved to be the superior side early and often as it was
the Spartans maintaining pressure almost entirely throughout the
contest.
Vaness Kovacs got a head to a corner kick in the second minute as
she found the back of the net for the Spartans first goal of the
night and sparked what turned into a five-goal barrage. Also
scoring for the Spartans was Jessica King (Liverpool, England), who
netted two, as well as Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) and Alicia
Tesan (Vancouver).
The Wesmen (1-7-0) battled well, but couldn't keep up with a TWU
side that was determined to earn back-to-back win for the first
time all year. After starting the year a tie with UBC and loss to
Victoria, the Spartans are now 3-0-2 over their last five
games.
The Spartans are back in action Saturday when they will host
Manitoba at 5 p.m. The game can be seen at twu.canadawest.tv.
The Wesmen also return to the pitch Saturday as they will travel to
play UBC at 5 p.m.

Pronghorns-Vikes
Stats
by Ali Lee, Vikes Communications
VICTORIA – Shared scoring duties lifted the
Victoria Vikes 7-1 over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday at
Centennial Stadium.
The Vikes, still undefeated at home, are now 5-2-0 in the Canada
West standings, while the Horns drop to 0-6-2.
Contributions from seven different scorers helped the Vikes to
their lopsided victory over the Horns on home turf. Carly
Branion-Calles opened the scoring, while Lindsay Hoetzel, Cassie
Dennis, Emma Greig, Samantha Lee, Lindsay Machin, Natasha Magnus
also tallied with the latter five notching their first of the
season. Dennis was credited the game winner, while rookie keeper
Austin Studer made her CIS debut in the second half of the
game.
For Lethbridge, keeper duties were split between Myriah Marino and
Taylor Thomas, who together faced 18 shots. The Horns struggled to
generate any offence despite obvious talent in goal scorer Alycia
Amatto and supporting cast Stephanie Groten and Danielle
Lagemaat.
The Vikes will turn around to host the Calgary Dinos, who are now
5-1-2 after a tie tonight against Fraser Valley. The Pronghorns
will trek to the mainland to visit the Cascades in Chilliwack, B.C.
