SUDBURY, ON – The Laurentian Lady Vees played host the Queens Gaels, in a rain filled encounter at the Laurentian Soccer fields. Coming off an impressive performance versus RMC, the Vees were looking to continue their fine form, however, the Gaels were on a different agenda, and walked away as 1-0 victors when all was said and done.

Before the game, Laurentian Athletics honoured the contribution of some of its long serving Lady Vees. In the final home game of their Laurentian careers, Lisa Watson, Renee Jacques, Crystal-Ann Hackett, and Michelle Philp were honoured by staff, family, and friends in a touching ceremony before kick-off.

The first half saw the ladies on both teams battling harsh playing conditions, with a bitter cold and sweeping rain battering the field. This resulted in a slow start to the game, with neither team establishing a true foothold on the game. However, it was the Gaels who broke the deadlock. The goal came after a sweetly struck freekick crashed against the post, allowing Queens Midfielder Riley Filion to tap in to open the scoring in the 14th minute. This would remain the same for the remainder of the half, with neither team able to add to their tally.

The second half brought about more of the same, with both teams battling hard from start to finish. The Lady Vees tested the Gaels on numerous occasions, with Lisa Watson (Newmarket, ON) testing the Gaels keeper on a couple of chances. However, neither team was able to find the twine in the entirety of the second half, with the referees’ final whistle marking a 1-0 win for the Queens Gaels.

The Lady Vees will head south to take on the Ryerson Rams and Toronto Varsity Blues next weekend, for the final games of the regular season, before the Vees kick off post-season action.

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier women's soccer team broke their two game losing streak in a big way on Sunday afternoon. The No. 5 ranked Golden Hawks rode three second half goals to a 4-0 win over the Windsor Lancers.

Laurier was coming off consecutive losses to Western and McMaster, and came out in the first half firing. The Hawks put nine shots on goal but they were unable to beat Windsor's Tara Bernard-Rae of Mississauga, Ont., until the final minute of the half when rookie Kiara Reyes of Kitchener, Ont., potted her first career goal.

It was more of the same in the second half with Laurier directing 11 shots on net. In the 54th minute, Laurier's Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., beat Bernard-Rae for her 13th goal of the season, tying her for second in the OUA in scoring. Kayleigh Bell of Waterloo, Ont., nabbed her second goal of the season in the 74th minute. Third year defender Kelsey Tikka of Thunder Bay, Ont., scored her first career goal on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to round out the scoring for Laurier.

Katrina Ward of Surrey, B.C., recorded her second shutout of the season in net for the Hawks who only have two games left in their regular season.

The Hawks (10-2-2) will host the Guelph Gryphons (6-3-4) on September 20th in crucial game for the Hawks, who lead the tight OUA West by only three points over Western (9-3-2). The Lancers (1-9-4) will have to contend with the surging McMaster Marauders (8-3-2) in their next match.

OTTAWA - Now even the wet and cold conditions could slow down the uOttawa women’s soccer team, who put on another solid display at Matt Anthony Field on Sunday afternoon, shutting out the Trent Excalibur 9-0. The Gee-Gees remain undefeated heading into their final game of the regular season next weekend.

The Gee-Gees controlled the tempo of the game from the very beginning with their ball possession and play making skills. Any Excalibur threat was quickly turned over and transitioned into a scoring chance for uOttawa.

The garnet and grey had a well balanced attack against the Excalibur with seven different goal scorers getting in on the action. Second year striker Krista Draycott and game MVP Tessa Dimitrakopoulos lead the way for Ottawa with two goals each. Vanessa MacMillan, Corina Jarrett, Gillian Baggott, Sheniz Eyuzlu and Lili Wong were the other goal scorers in garnet and grey.

“We played every healthy player in order to give a good look to everybody on the team,” said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. “We are going to have to use our training and our last regular season game to solidify our starting 11 and the quality of the bench that we can use throughout the game.”

It took a little longer than expected for the Gee-Gees to establish their notoriously strong offensive attack. Their first shot on Excalibur goaltender Emily Webb was not generated until the 16th minute. But the home team settled down and found their rhythm, scoring on all four shots they took in the first half.

“We had miserable conditions today and I think our play reflected that for periods of the game,” Johnson of his squad’s start. “I think in some ways it was, mentally, a very difficult game to play, having clinched first place on Friday and coming into today with poor conditions.”

The second half saw the Gee-Gees come out with a much better start, scoring twice within four minutes of the opening whistle. Dimitrakopoulos found herself involved in a scramble down low and managed to find a small window to shoot the ball into the Excalibur goal.

Lili Wong made her way back onto the score sheet on a penalty kick in extra time. Lili’s speed and power could only be countered by the Excalibur goaltender taking Lili out of the play illegally, warranting a yellow card and surrendering a goal on the resulting penalty kick.

The Gee-Gees have one remaining regular season game next Friday against Queen’s. If the uOttawa women are to keep their undefeated 2012 regular season record, they will have to defeat the always challenging Golden Gaels. “Queen’s is such a good opposition, so we want to get a good result against a potential playoff opponent,” said Johnson. “The team set the goal to remain undefeated fairly early on, and I think they would still like to accomplish that.”

Shots on goal ended 16-8 in favour of the Marauders and Brittany Duffey (Markham, Ont.) played the full 90 minutes for the shut out.

With just three games left in the regular season, McMaster looks to secure a bye in the playoffs and would need to finish first or second in the OUA West to do so. The Marauders are currently fighting for second place with the Western Mustangs.

SASKATOON - For the first time in history, the University of Saskatchewan women’s soccer team has earned a spot in the Canada West postseason.

Saskatchewan secured the spot after a 5-0 victory over the visiting Mount Royal University Cougars Sunday in Saskatoon’s Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.

In the Huskie victory, rookie Jenelle Zapski netted a hat trick scoring in the 15th, 23rd and 52nd minutes of the match.

The win moves Saskatchewan to a 6-4-0 record with 18 points, meaning the Huskies can finish no worse than eighth in the season with two matches remaining. The Huskies were host of the Canada West Final Four in 1999 receiving an automatic berth into the tournament. In 2012, eight women’s soccer teams advance to playoffs.

Mount Royal falls to 0-7-3 and will enter the final weekend of the season in search of their first win in their first Canada West season.

Zapski opened the scoring in the 15th minute when the ball landed on her foot after a play in by captain Leanne Mylymok. She added her second of the match in the 23rd minute on a shot from the right side of the field. Zapski’s final goal of the day was scored in the 52nd minute on a scramble in front of Cougars’ keeper Kelsey Markland.

Also scoring in the win for the Huskies was defender Jenna Newton on a quick play up the left side in the 27th minute and Nicholle Morrison in the 68th minute.

Markland finished the match making 11 saves for Cougars, while Marissa Striuk made three before being replaced in the 64th minute for rookie Payton Pederson.

Saskatchewan outshot Mount Royal 24-5.

The Huskies travel to face the Calgary Dinos and Lethbridge Pronghorns to close out the Canada West season next weekend, while Mount Royal returns home to host Winnipeg Wesmen and Manitoba Bisons.
