HAMILTON, Ont. - The York University Lions women's rugby team went down to the McMaster Marauders by a score of 43-14 in their OUA quarter-final game on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 14) in Hamilton, Ont.

The loss ends what was a strong season for the Lions. They finished third in the OUA Russell Division with a 3-3 record, earning wins over Laurier, Trent and Toronto, before falling to the second-seeded Marauders in the first playoff game.

The two squads played a close match for much of the contest as McMaster led by single digits with just 20 minutes left on the clock. But the Marauders found their offensive touch at the end, putting up 24 points late in the second half, to seal the victory.

First-year player Dorrian Khouri (Markham, Ont.) had an impressive game with two tries, accounting for 10 of the team's 14 points in the game. The two majors marked her first scores of the season.

The other four points were courtesy of Alexis Boltsis (Mississauga, Ont.), who kicked a conversion on each of the tries scored.

McMaster's Stephanie Black (Ottawa) was the top scorer for the Marauders, making good on four conversion kicks and scoring one try for 13 points.

Sarah Berry (East York, Ont.), Hannah Braithwaite (Kingston, Ont.), Margaret Cogger-Orr (Thornhill, Ont.), Claire Lockhart (Waterloo, Ont.), Emily Ricketts (Oakville, Ont.) and Lauren Walkden (Collingwood, Ont.) all accounted for one try in the match to round out the Marauders scoring.

While the Lions are done for the year, the Marauders will continue on in the semifinals next weekend. They will face the nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons, who shut out the Brock Badgers by a score of 109-0 in their quarter-final game.

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Waterloo women's rugby team punched their ticket to the OUA semifinals with a convincing 24-7 victory over the visiting Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at the CIF fields.  Waterloo scored 19 first half points and the defence stood tall throughout for the win.

The Warriors opened the scoring 15 minutes into the game as Nastasha Vrablic (Cambridge) ran it in for the try.  Only five minutes later Emily Sanderson (New Hamburg) added to Waterloo's lead with a nice run down the middle of the field for the try.  Vrablic added the conversion kick to give Waterloo the 12-0 lead.

The Warriors continued their offensive pressure and were rewarded by a dazzling run up the near sidelines by Rachel Brown (Cambridge).  Brown flew by three Mustang defenders for the five points while Vrablic added yet another conversion to give Waterloo the 19-0 lead heading into half time.

The Warriors continued their dominance early on in the second half and padded their lead thanks to a try by Sarah Jane Garland (New Hamburg) to put the home side up 24-0.

Western would break the Warrior shutout bid on a try by Danielle Spice and successful convert by Meaghann Buitinga but Waterloo's defence would hold their ground the remainder of the game for the 24-7 win.

The Warriors turn their attention to the Queen's Gaels, a team they have yet to see in 2012, for the OUA semifinals next Saturday, October 20.  Game time is scheduled for 3:30pm at Nixon Field in Kingston.
