HAMILTON, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons and the McMaster
Marauders dominate the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's
rugby All-Stars and major awards winners for 2010 with seven
honours each.
The No. 2 CIS ranked Gryphons walk away with the most award winners
in the Shiels Division, taking five spots on the All-Star team as
well as two major awards.
Guelph’s Jacey Murphy (Alliston, Ont.) was named the Gilbert
Canada Shiels Division most valuable player. The fourth-year
eightman played a huge role in the Gryphons first place finish,
tallying 85 points in five games, good for second highest scorer in
OUA. Murphy has now been named an All-Star two seasons in a row and
was named an All-Canadian last year.
A total of five Gryphons are named to the Shiels All-Star team
including Murphy. Fly half, three time All-Star and former
All-Canadian Brittany Benn (Napanee, Ont.), two-time All-Star lock
Caitlin Beaton (Clavering, Ont.), inside centre Jane Kirby
(Brampton, Ont.), and flanker Stephanie deVries (Ariss, Ont.) also
make the list from Guelph.
Shiels Division rookie of the year presented by Gilbert Canada was
awarded to Dominique Monaghan (Markham, Ont.). In her first-year as
a centre, Monaghan was a key part of the Gryphons defence, who gave
up zero points in the regular season.
The No. 9 Waterloo Warriors claim four spots on the All-Star list
for the Shiels Division. Fullback Caitlin Martin (Teeswater, Ont.)
scored a team high four tries this season to lead the Warriors in
scoring. Also on the list was eightman Sam Eyles (Erin, Ont.), prop
Briana Cunningham (Waterloo, Ont.) and lock Renee Woodhouse
(Stratford, Ont.). Waterloo was headed by Gilbert Canada Shiels
Division coaches of the year, Jay and Leslie Shaw.
Badgers eightman Misha Maric (Scarborough, Ont.) was ninth in OUA
scoring this season with 28 points. Teammates Holly Monkman
(Cheltenham, Ont.), two time All-Star and Nicole Kovacs (Welland,
Ont.) were also named All-Stars for Brock.
Western’s fly half Rachael McMaster (Brantford, Ont.) and
eightman Elizabeth Wilson (Ottawa, Ont.) were named Shiels Division
All-Stars.
Laurier rounds out the division with fourth-year Kayley Powers
(Kingston, Ont.).
In the Russell Division, the No. 8 Marauders tie the Gryphons in
award winners with seven, earning all three major awards and four
spot on the All-Star list.
Gilbert Canada coach of the year goes to Sandro Fiorino who led the
Marauders to a semifinal berth before losing to a strong Gryphons
team 39-0. Fiorino wins his third coach of the year title in six
years, his first two coming in the 2004 and 2009 seasons.
McMaster’s Natasha Turner (Rockcliffe, Ont.) was named the
Gilbert Canada Russell Division most valuable player. The veteran
centre led the Marauders in points with 35 and finished sixth in
OUA for scoring. The fourth-year garnered seven tries over five
games. Turner was also named an All-Star for a second consecutive
year.
Turner’s teammate Claire Lockhart (Waterloo, Ont.) receives
the Gilbert Canada rookie of the year honour after making quite an
impression on the league in her first season as a Marauder. The
rookie All-Star was a key factor to McMaster’s team at
prop.
Along with Turner and Lockhart, scrum half Allison Morris (Stoney
Creek, Ont.) and lock Varsha Tripathi (Kincardine, Ont.) were also
named to the Russell Division All-Star team for the Marauders.
The No. 6 Queen’s Gaels head into the OUA Championships this
weekend with five All-Stars. Fifth-year Katie Pasic (Oakville,
Ont.) won the community service award for the Gaels for her
accomplishments off the field.
Centre Andrea Wadsworth (Toronto) was named a Russell Division
All-Star for the second season in a row. The third-year was fourth
in OUA scoring with a total of 41 points. Fifth-year flanker
Jocelyn Poirier (Ottawa, Ont.) was also named an All-Star for the
Gaels and cracked the top ten scorers with 25 regular season
points. She has been named an All-Star three years in a row for the
Gaels. Joining their teammates on the All-Star list also include
two time All-Stars scrum half Susan Heald (Burlington, Ont.) and
centre Karyle Wong (Ottawa, Ont.). To round out the list was
eightman and first time All-Star Ash Ward (Barrie, Ont.).
The Lions finished the season with three All-Stars. York boasts
All-Star Tiera Thomas-Reynolds (Scarborough, Ont.). The fourth-year
winger was third in scoring in OUA with 45 points and led the Lions
to a quarterfinal berth. Scrumhalf Melissa Cunningham (Thornhill,
Ont.) and inside centre Jolene John (Fort Erie, Ont.) were also
named to the Russell Division All-Star team.
Toronto’s All-Star’s are both veterans for the Blues.
Fourth-year fly half Lee-Anne Corrigan (Phelpston, Ont.) finished
seventh in the league in scoring with 35 points. Teammate Louise
Chen (Ottawa, Ont.) was also named an All-Star this season.
Finishing out the Russell Division All-Stars is Trent’s
Whitney Black (Belleville, Ont.).
