KINGSTON, Ont. – The No. 7 Queen's Gaels have advanced to the OUA Championship with a 15-8 OUA semifinal win over the No. 9 Waterloo Warriors in women's rugby.
Queen's will host the OUA Championship next Saturday against the Guelph Gryphons at Kingston Field with kickoff scheduled for 12:00pm. Guelph trampled McMaster 39-0 in the other OUA semifinal to qualify for the championship.
The win also guarantees Queen's a berth in the CIS Championship held November 4 – 7 in Peterborough, Ont. The appearance in the CIS Championship is the Gaels first since rugby became a CIS sport in 1998.
Annika Rinas of Oakville, Ont., was the Gaels top scorer with eight points posting a try and a penalty goal in the semifinal win. Andrea Wadsworth of Toronto and Karlye Wong of Ottawa also posted a try each to round out the Gaels scoring
Sam Eyles of Erin, Ont., scored Waterloo's only try in the match while Valerie Bigelow of Thornhill, Ont. had a penalty goal.
Queen's held a slim 10-8 advantage before adding a try late in the game to secure the win.
The win marks the first time since 1995 the Gaels have qualified to play in the OUA Championship final.

Guelph 39, McMaster 0 Final

GUELPH, Ont. – The No. 2 Guelph Gryphons have advanced to the OUA Championship with a 39-0 OUA semifinal win over the McMaster Marauders this afternoon in Guelph.
The Guelph Gryphons will now look to win their third straight OUA title as they travel to Kingston to play the Queen’s Gaels in the OUA Championship next Saturday (Oct. 30) at Kingston Field with kickoff scheduled for 12:00pm. The Gaels earned the other spot in the Championships after defeating the Waterloo Warriors 15-8 today in the other OUA semi-final.
In today’s game, Guelph was forced to play team rugby against a tough McMaster squad. In previous games, individual athletes were able to showcase their talent, but against McMaster's hard tackles and quickness off the mark, Guelph relied on each other for support and continuity.
In the first 20 minutes of the game, Guelph’s pack was driving hard in the rucks and pushing the pace with quick trail ball. The Gryphon backline came up against a disciplined defence and were forced to adjust their plays accordingly. Defensively, Guelph pushed hard against McMaster forcing them to rely on kicker Becky Delaney to gain territory. Fullback Katie McNally (Guelph, Ont.) fielded the kicks with poise and Guelph was able to attack from anywhere on the field.
Jacey Murphy (Alliston, Ont.) once again led the Gryphons with three tries while the other four came from Mimi Rahneva (Ottawa), rookie Sharon Rafferty (Brantford, Ont.), Lisa Shellington (Brantford, Ont.) and Linsdey Peebles (Oakville, Ont.).
After a stellar first half, the Gryphons lost a little intensity until the substitutions came on with fresh legs. The pace was once again pushed, keeping McMaster on the back foot.
"It was a tremendous game of team rugby today. We finally looked like the team we knew we could be," said head coach Colette McAuley.
Next weekend the Gryphons will travel to Kingston to play the Queens Gaels in the OUA Championship finals. Guelph will look to win their third straight OUA title. Game time will be at 12:00 p.m.

Acadia 17, Saint Mary's 12 Final - 2OT

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Following two five-minute overtime halves, the 2010 Subway AUS women's rugby semifinal was settled in a sudden death overtime period when Acadia's Emilie Chiasson scored a try, capping a quick moving drive that ended the marathon game and gave the host Axewomen a 17-12 victory.
With the win, Acadia advances to face the defending AUS champion StFX X-Women next Sunday in Antigonish, NS, in the 2010 Subway AUS championship game. Sunday's winner will qualify for the CIS women's rugby championship hosted November 4-7 by Trent University in Peterborough, ON.
Acadia's Margaret Curry scored the first of five trys in the match six minutes into the first half and Erin Beazley converted the try to give the Axewomen an early 7-0 lead.
The Axewomen stretched the margin to 12 points following a Beazley try that was not converted.
Saint Mary's didn't give up and after the intermission, as Kaitlyn Sobey scored the first of two second half Huskies trys at the 28 minute mark of the second half.
SMU Subway Player of the Game Katie McGraw scored the second try of the second half, which was then converted by Katelyn Smith to tie the game at 12.
Following two scoreless overtime halves of five minutes each, the game moved into a five-minute overtime period of sudden death.
After three minutes of sudden death play, Chiasson scored the game winner.
Head Coach Matthew Durant was happy with the win and estatic with the team effort after the second half.
"Our team pulled together after a lackluster second half and played a great overtime period," said Durant. "Chiasson, Lafleur and Beazley led a refocused squad for the overtime win."
The Axewomen had several key injuries against the Huskies including standouts Victoria Rombaut and Allison Jordan.
