Hosts Carabins light the lamp in dominant fashion, move on to face Cougars

MONTREAL, QC. (U SPORTS) - Mylène Lefebvre scored two goals to lead the No. 5-seeded Montréal Carabins to a 4-1 win over the No. 4 UNB REDS in the second quarterfinal of the 2023 Women’s Hockey Championships at CEPSUM in Montréal, Thursday.

MONTREAL, QC. (U SPORTS) - Mylène Lefebvre scored two goals to lead the No. 5-seeded Montréal Carabins to a 4-1 win over the No. 4 UNB REDS in the second quarterfinal of the 2023 Women's Hockey Championships at CEPSUM in Montréal, Thursday.

The hosts took advantage of a lively crowd in the opening minutes, accounting for the first nine shots of the game. The Carabins drew first blood with an unassisted tally from Kaleigh Quennec at the 11:36 mark. The ice was tilted in favour of Montréal throughout the opening frame, as they outshot the REDS 14-2 and led 1-0 after the first.

Montréal continued to impose their will in the second period by way of their special teams. A pair of powerplay goals just four minutes apart for the Carabins from Mylène Lefebvre and Amélie Poire-Lehoux gave the hosts a 3-0 lead. A perfect 2-for-2 with the man advantage gave them a comfortable three-goal lead after 40 minutes.

The teams traded goals in the third period as Mylène Lefebvre scored her second of the game en route to being named player of the game for Montréal. Lillian George scored the lone goal for UNB with 2:44 to go. The Carabins closed it out with a 4-1 win.

Montréal's Aube Racine got the win in net for the Carabins, stopping 13 of 14 shots she faced in the game. UNB's Kendra Woodland faced 28 shots, saving 24 in the loss.

The Carabins advance to Saturday's championship semifinal, where they will play the Mount Royal Cougars game at 4:30 p.m. (Eastern). UNB will face Toronto Varsity Blues in a consolation game on Saturday at 10 a.m. (Eastern).
