OTTAWA (CIS) – The CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches
Association proudly announced Friday its fundraising initiative to
raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - and other
related charities - is up and running for the eighth straight
year.
The Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success
since it was launched in the fall of 2007 with over $760,000 in
donations. This season, for the fourth year in a row, all 47 CIS
women’s basketball schools are set to participate in the
program.
At the 2014 CIS championship in Windsor, last March, the WBCA
presented a cheque for $112,898.03 to the Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation, while an additional $25,462.55 was amassed by
universities that elected to donate their fundraised money to local
or provincial organizations. The overall Shoot for the Cure total
of $138,360.58 in 2013-14 made it the most successful edition to
date.
Overall donations since 2007 now stand at $761,309.12, including
$633,303.89 to CBCF.
Once again this year, CIS schools will raise money through regular
season games, non-conference matches, tournaments and special
events.
The 2014-15 activities kick off Friday night (Oct. 24) at Carleton
University and at the University of Manitoba, which are both
running multiple events over the weekend.
“We are very excited for the eighth edition of our annual
Shoot for the Cure initiative,” says Jeff Speedy, University
of New Brunswick head coach and Shoot for the Cure project manager.
“We’re thrilled to have 100 percent participation from
our women’s basketball programs for the fourth year in a row.
Hopefully, our efforts will get us one step closer to finding a
cure to combat this brutal disease.”
The fundraising initiative was the brainchild of Rod Gilpin, the
long-time bench boss of Bishop’s women’s program now in
his seventh season as head coach of the Gaiters’ men.
