The Windsor Lancers Women's Basketball team captured the OUA
West Championship with a thrilling 66-61 victory over the Western
Mustangs on Wednesday night at the St. Denis Centre.
With the victory, the Lancers will now head to Ottawa to battle the
University of Ottawa Gee Gees for the OUA Provincial Championship
on Saturday at 3:00pm.
They have also punched their ticket to the CIS National
Championship tournament next weeked in Hamilton on March
12-14th.
Windsor struggled in the first half of the game, shooting a poor
15% from field goal range. Both teams traded points back and forth
throughout the first quarter before Western took a one point, 10-9,
lead to end the quarter.
In the second, the Mustangs continued to pull away as Jacklyn Selfe
hit five straight points to build up Western's lead to ten, 30-20,
with only three minutes remaining in the first half.
The Lancers jumped started their offense over the remaining minutes
to close the gap, but went into the half down by six, 35-29.
Windsor came alive in the third quarter, more than doubling their
shooting percentage in the half to 37.5%, and taking their first
lead since the first quarter with 1:25 left in the third
quarter.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the Lancers held a one point lead
as each team chipped away at each other. Both teams struggled to
score in the fourth as both teams went four minutes without making
a basket.
In the dying minutes of the game, Windsor managed to build up their
lead to six points and hold off the Western attack to take the win
and West Division title with a 66-61 win.
The Lancers were led by Laura Mullins with 17 points, while Shavaun
Reaney contributed 15 points, and Jessica Clemencon had 11. Iva
Peklova led all athletes with 13 rebounds, as Windsor out-rebounded
Western 49-36.
