FREDERICTON, N.B. - The UNB Varsity Reds defeated the Dalhousie
Tigers Sunday night by a score of 3-1 in the second match of the
best two-of-three 2013 Subway AUS men's volleyball championship
series to claim their second banner in the past three seasons.
A record crowd of 1,144 came out to the Richard J. Currie Center to
watch the hometown V-Reds recover from an opening set loss to win
the next three sets and punch their ticket to the 2013 CIS men's
volleyball championship at Laval University March 1-3, 2013.
Set scores were (23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-7).
The Subway Player of the Game for UNB was AUS rookie of the year,
Eivind Anderson who finished with 13.0 points, 10 kills and 9
digs.
The Subway Player of the Game for the Tigers was Jonathan MacDonald
with 9.0 points, 7 kills and 5 digs.
UNB's Julio Fernandez was rewarded with the AUS men's volleyball
playoff MVP.
Fernandez, also named the AUS league most valuable player earlier
this week, led both teams in points with 20.0 and kills with
18.
Other stand-outs for the Varsity Reds included third-year outside
hitter Marc White (13.5 points, 10 kills), outside hitter Matt
Sweet (seven digs).
For Dalhousie, team captain and AUS all-star Bryan Duquette led the
offence with 11.0 points, 11 kills and four digs. Second-year
outside hitter and conference all-star Alex Dempsey added 14.5
points, 13 kills and five digs.
