WINNIPEG - The No. 3 ranked UBC Thunderbirds scored three goals in the second half to propel them to a 5-1 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg.

The victory improves UBC's record to 6-0-0. Winnipeg falls to 0-7-1.

Gagandeep Dosanjh scored two goals for the T-Birds. Daniel Gazzola, Greg Smith and Reynold Stewart added singles. Richie Rundle scored the lone Wesmen goal

Winnipeg opened the scoring in the 19th minute with Richie Rundle taking a perfect pass from Oleg Andruschchyshyn and beating T-Bird goalkeeper Luke O'Shea to give the Wesmen a 1-0 lead.

Daniel Gazzola tied the match with his first goal of the season, making a great move on Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago and tucking the ball just inside the post.

UBC grabbed the lead in the 31st minute. Greg Smith scored his second of the season on a perfect set up from Navid Mashinchi to make the score 2-1 heading into the halftime break.

In the second half the T-Birds got some breathing room in the 53rd minute as Dosanjh scored his first goal of the match and followed that up in the 80th minute with his second of the match to extend the UBC lead to 4-1. The two goals by Dosanjh gives him six goals on the season. Reynold Stewart closed out the scoring in the 89th minute to make the final score 5-1.

UBC outshot Winnipeg 22-9 in the contest. Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago made eight saves, Luke O'Shea made two saves for UBC.

UBC will be at home next week to face UNBC on Friday and Saturday. Winnipeg will travel to Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns on Saturday and Sunday.

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's soccer team (5-2-3) hosted the UOIT Ridgebacks (3-7-0) Sunday afternoon for the second meeting of the season between the two.

The first half was uneventful and saw neither team manage a shot. Going late into the second half it looked as though the game might end as the second scoreless bout for Laurier in three days, however a pair of late goals gave the Hawks a 2-0 win over the Ridgebacks.

Scoring for the Hawks were Donald Chmura of Waterloo, Ont., with a goal at the 77th minute and Adrian Bucksam of Mississauga, Ont., scoring in the 89th minute. Chmura's goal was his first of the season while Bucksam's was his second.

In net for his fifth shutout of the season was keeper Brett Harrington of Tillsonburg, Ont., who faced two shots.

The Golden Hawks take to the road Wednesday to visit the Brock Badgers (0-6-1). The game begins at 3 p.m.

Guelph, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons men’s soccer team defeated the visiting Western Mustangs 1-0 today (September 30) at the Gryphons Soccer Complex.

The game thrusts the Gryphons to a 4-4-1 standing while dropping the Mustangs to 3-4-3.

Great defensive stability heading into the game kept numerous Mustang attacks at bay throughout the first half of the game to keep Guelph in pace with Western’s strong offensive play.  An additional five saves by Chad Paparoni (Burlington, Ont.) in the first half alone alleviated defensive pressure on the Gryphons, giving the offense time to recoup.

While possession remained largely up for grabs in the first half with neither teams taking a chink out of the other’s armour; the Gryphon offense slowly began to find its rhythm.  With the help of Mike Bijman, (Brantford, Ont.) the Gryphons tallied their fourth shot in just under 15 minutes to gain necessary momentum going into halftime.

With two early bookings in the second, it was clear that the emotional stage would only intensify as the battle for possession continued.  While the offsides stacked up on both sides, and the fouls becoming all too common, a strong strike off the Mustang post in the 54th minute rattled the Mustang cage.  Further insult to injury was added as Colin Aubrey (Ottawa, Ont.) carefully rallied the rebound to dish it off to Ricky Maimonis (Oakville, Ont.) who hammered home the Gryphons’ first goal of the game.

Combined efforts by Paul Manchisi (Oakville, Ont.), Marc Bijman (Brantford, Ont,), Michael Bijman and Justin Springer (Burlington, Ont.), allowed Chad Paparoni to easily stop the three Mustang strikes on net to secure his third shutout of the 2012 sesason.

The Gryphons look to replicate their success as they take on the UOIT Ridgebacks in Oshawa on Wednesday (October, 3).  The game is set to start at 6:00 pm.

CALGARY  – The No. 7 ranked Trinity Western University men’s soccer team scored two second-half goals to slip past the Mount Royal University Cougars 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Mount Royal Stadium Field in Calgary.

“We had a workman like effort after a big travel day and I was very pleased with our performance, although we should have done better on restarts,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “We have to find ways to take the heart out of a team earlier but overall a good performance by Braden Gant, Spencer Schmidt and our back four looked tight again.”

Second-half substitute forward Spencer Schmidt scored off a free kick in the 59th minute and midfielder Cameron Parkes added another on a long, looping shot in the 87th.

The Spartans remain unbeaten in eight matches with a 6-0-2 record. The Cougars, meanwhile, sport a 2-5-0 record.

TWU keeper Andrew Hicks made one save to earn the shut-out victory, while Mount Royal’s David Thalheimer made eight saves in the loss.

Trinity Western’s goal came because of the work of forward Jarvis Ambaka, a sophomore who hails from Maragoli, Kenya. He went on a long run and was brought down just outside the 18-yard box. The Spartans were awarded a free kick and Schmidt avoided the wall and blasted his shot into the lower right of the net past surprised goalkeeper David Thalheimer.

“Spencer’s free kick was a quality hard low shot and happy for him that he is back on the page again,” added Rohla.

The second goal was the result of some miscommunication between Thalheimer and a teammate. The ball ended up on Parkes’ foot and he sent an arching kick into the goal before Thalheimer could get back into position.

The Cougars are on the road, technically, next weekend when they face the University of Calgary Dinos Oct. 6-7. Those games both begin at 2:15 p.m.

“Pleased with the three points, but disappointed that we didn’t get six,” concluded Rohla. “But overall good play and looking forward to a rest next weekend.”

TWU will have a weekend off before heading to Saskatchewan to play the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Oct.13 and Edmonton to face the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Oct. 14.

Match notes: TWU had the edge in play throughout the match as they finished with 22 shots to MRU’s two…the Spartans also had the edge in corner kicks at nine to nil…Schmidt led Trinity Western with a total of five shots…
