UOIT 2 Windsor 2 Final
WINDSOR, Ont. - The Lancer men's soccer team ended the regular season with a 2-2 draw against the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday, following a 2-0 loss to Guelph on Saturday afternoon.

The Lancers finished the season with a 5-5-6 record and a fifth place finish in the OUA West division.

Against the Gryphons, the game was very open right from the start with both teams wasting no chances to get shots aimed at goal. Windsor's best chances came from corner kicks and long balls forcing Guelph goalie Chad Paparoni to make four saves alone in the first half to keep the Lancers off the board.

Guelph created several good chances themselves, also putting four shots on target in the half. However, the teams went into the half tied at zero.

In the second, the Lancers struggled to shot the ball on target, while Guelph managed to put two behind Lancer goaltender Dan Mendonca.

Guelph would get on the scoreboard in the 72nd minute when midfielder Tim Flynn headed the ball in Mendonca and just under the bar for his second goal of the season.

With just one minute remaining in regulation time, Flynn would score his second of the game to secure the win for the home school.

Overall, Mendonca made 6 saves in net for the Lancers against Guelph.

The Lancers saw themselves in a come from behind position again on Sunday against UOIT, as just 8 minutes into the game, UOIT striker Paul Craven was able to put one past the keeper into the bottom right corner as Mendonca was forced to come out and challenge the play, giving the Ridgebacks the 1-0 lead.

Immediately following the Ridgebacks first goal, Mendonca came up with two big saves keeping the game within one.

Not discouraged, the Lancers charged right back when in the 11th minute Windsor's Mike Pio had a solid chance when he rung his shot off of the post. Just seven minutes later, Pio was able to capitalize a in the 18th minute, after receiving a well-placed through ball from midfielder, Mike Watson to tie the game at one.

The Lancers had a couple of attempts early in the second half, most coming off of rebounds from their own corner kicks. Paul Frenken and Eric Cirovski each had a shot on net, but the Ridgebacks keeper Matt Caldaroni was able to come up with the saves.

Windsor took the lead in the 81st minute when Watson dribbled through the UOIT defense and placed one into the bottom left corner, making the score 2-1.

UOIT was able to respond in the last couple of minutes, as UOIT midfielder Matt Craven shot one into the top corner of the goal in the 88th minute, making the final 2-2.

Windsor will head to London on Wednesday for the first round of the OUA playoffs against the Western Mustangs. Stay tuned to www.goLancers.ca for all playoff information as it becomes available.

KINGSTON, Ont. - A last-minute goal from Nathan Klemencic of Trenton, Ont. saved the Gaels from a loss to the Voyageurs this Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium. The game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The first half of the game started slow. For the first 44 minutes of play, it remained scoreless for both sides, until Patrick Zanetti of Carp, Ont. connected on his first shot of the game. The Gaels entered the half with a 1-0 lead.

The second half was an offensive show. Zanetti scored his second of the afternoon ten minutes after play began, giving the Gaels a more comfortable lead. In the 72nd minute, the Voyageurs found an answer and began to chip away at the lead. In the very next minute, the Voyageurs scored again, tying the game at two apiece.

In the final minute of the half Laurentien scored again. It did not look good for the Gaels. They did not let up, and Klemencic was able to score with less than a minute remaining for the Gaels, saving them from the loss. The final score was 3-3.

The Gaels outshot the Voyageurs 18-10, and Dylan Maxwell of Vancouver had seven saves on the night.

The tie brings the Gaels record to 7-4-3 for the season.

Ryerson 2 No. 3 Carleton 3 Final

OTTAWA - The No. 3 nationally ranked Carleton University Ravens men’s soccer team came from behind to beat the Ryerson University Rams 3-2 on Sunday at Ravens’ Field.

With the win, the Ravens finish first in the OUA East with an 11-3 record. They earn a first-round bye and will host an OUA quarter-final game on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m.

The Ravens started the game on the back foot, with Ram Viktor Anastasov (Toronto) scoring in the first minute to throw Carleton’s game plan into disarray.

The game never really flowed with fouls slowing the game down. Ryerson doubled their advantage in the 37th minute when Anastasov scored his second of the game off a cross from the left wing.

The Ravens responded in the 44th minute, when Kristian Quosdorf (Cornwall, Ont.) chased down a Rams defender, got the ball and crossed it in for Justin Campos (Summerside, P.E.I.) to tap it in.

The Ravens would tie things up in the 55th minute with Josh Dewar-Morris (Ottawa) converting the low cross for his third goal of the season.

The Ravens started to dominate the play and found the net again in the 58th minute. The ball was cleared out of the Rams box and found Danny Gutierrez (Ottawa) twenty yards out, who struck a dipping volley to seize the lead.

The Ravens had to endure sustained pressure with Ryerson denied twice by the crossbar. But Carleton held on for the win and sealed first place in the East, one point ahead of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

Waterloo 1 Guelph 3 Final

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons and the Waterloo Warriors met up today (Oct. 23) in Guelph at the new Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Gryphons led the match and ended up taking the game 3-1.

They add another win to their standings, finishing their regular season with 10-4-2. The Warriors finish with 3-12-1.

It was a slow start for both teams, and the first fifteen minutes saw little action and no shots on either net. The stale-mate was finally broken in the 17th minute when Alex Biafore (Brampton, ON) crossed a rebound shot into an empty Warrior net, and Jacob Stolle (Stittsville, ON) slid to follow and tap it in. Waterloo nearly tied it up thirty minutes into the game, after an initial shot was blocked by Gryphon goal-keep Chad Paparoni (Burlington, ON), and Mike Azzopardi (Richmond Hill, ON) rebounded -  but shot just over the cross-bar.

Warrior forward Sohyb Basir (Waterloo, ON) was a force to be reckoned with throughout the match, with his speed and precision. He tied the score-board in the 59th minute for the Warriors, after sending in a low-shot from a cross that Paparoni couldn’t catch. Drew Gowan (Welland, ON) took the lead for the Gryphons 62 minutes into the game, with a second goal after he broke away from Warrior defense down the left wing and shot right past Waterloo’s goal-keep.

Only minutes later Max Bair-Marshall (Ottawa, ON) ran the same attack down the left wing – clearly taking advantage of a Waterloo weakness, and secured Guelph’s lead with a third goal in the 64th minute.  Bair-Marshall almost made it a fourth down the same left-wing attack but this time was cut off by Waterloo defense. The Gryphons ended the game with a confident 3-1 finish, securing the OUA finals.

The Gryphons will now compete in a playoff game although dates, times and locations are yet to be confirmed.  Please visit gryphons.ca for the most up-to-date schedules.
