Mixed results for UOIT curlers at Brock

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The UOIT curling teams got their first taste of action against Ontario University Athletics (OUA) opponents this weekend at the Brock Invitational.
 
Both the men's and women's teams posted 2-2 records and will now prepare for the OUA championship being hosted by the Ridgebacks at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club from Feb. 16-20. This will mark the first time in program history UOIT is hosting the provincial championship.

The men's team of Nick Meyede, Samuel Buckel, Colin Shaw and Seamus Pinfield went 1-1 each day, dropping their opening match and following it up with a win. On Saturday, the Ridgebacks lost 8-2 to Laurier but managed to beat Western 6-5, picking up a single point in the eighth end to clinch the victory.
 
On Sunday, the host Badgers beat UOIT 7-2 in the opening match of the day. UOIT would bounce back with a 7-5 comeback win over Trent. Down 5-4 with the hammer, the Ridgebacks scored three in the eighth end.
 
Laurier was the lone team to go undefeated at the bonspiel as they wrapped up play with a 4-0 record.
 
On the women's side, UOIT was represented by Brittany AndreyEmily GordonHafsah Hoda and Riley Weagant. The Ridgebacks got off to a rough start losing 10-4 to Laurier but were able to rebound beating Western 7-4.
 
UOIT had their best match of the weekend on Sunday morning beating McMaster 7-2. The Ridgebacks scored three in the third end followed by single points in the fifth, sixth and seventh ends. In their final match of the bonspiel the Ridgebacks fell 6-4 to Trent.
 
Brock, Toronto and Trent all finished with three wins and a tie to sit atop of the standings.
