KINGSTON, Ont. – Stephan Barrie has been named full-time head coach of the Queen's Gaels men's basketball program, announced by Leslie Dal Cin, Director of Athletics & Recreation, on Monday.
As part of the announcement, Athletics & Recreation has indicated that it will further enhance the coaching leadership to the men's basketball program by redeploying current resources to bring aboard an assistant coach with full-time responsibilities within the department. That will make Queen's one of a select few Canadian universities to have both a coach and assistant with full-time duties leading its men's basketball program.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Barrie to Queen's University as our men's basketball coach," said Leslie Dal Cin, Director, Athletics and Recreation for Queen's University. "He is a true student of the game and a strong leader who possess a very sound technical ability. He is constantly seeking professional development and has demonstrated his capacity to bring about a winning culture while directing a program to provincial and national contention."
"We see our new sport model, state-of-the-art facilities and commitment to staffing as integral steps to achieving our vision of being a top contending program in men's basketball," continued Dal Cin. "I am confident under Coach Barrie's leadership the Gaels will be successful on the provincial and national stage."
"This is a tremendous opportunity and I am appreciative of being given the responsibility to help lead the Gaels to new heights," said Stephan Barrie. "It's clear that Queen's is committed to becoming one of the top men's basketball programs in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). The vision is exciting and I'm ready to help transform this program into a contender which breads both athletic and academic success."
Barrie joins Queen's from the Western Mustangs where he just completed his fifth season as the head basketball coach of the women's team. During his tenure he transformed the Mustangs into a nationally ranked contender producing an 87-23 (.790) conference record which stands as the top mark in the OUA over his five seasons.
Under Barrie's leadership, Western earned its first women's basketball playoff victory since 2002 and its first appearance in the OUA West Final since 2000. The program also returned to the CIS Top Ten for the first time since 2000 and has finished the last three seasons ranked nationally.
Barrie has shown his focus on player development and has seen three players attain All-Canadian status (Matteke Hutzler, Amanda Anderson and Bess Lennox) as well as 18 occasion's players achieving OUA All-Star or All-Rookie team honours. He has also recruited three national team and 14 provincial team players into the Mustangs program.
Before joining Western, Barrie served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team. During his tenure with the Blues, working closely with long-time national team assistant coach Mike Katz, Toronto improved from a 6-16 record in 2004 to 16-6 in 2006.
Barrie began his extensive coaching career at M.M. Robinson High School in Burlington where he taught French, Geography and Physical Education beginning in 2000. He also coached with the Burlington Panthers Basketball Club.
Barrie is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario earning his Bachelor of Education in 2000. As a player he was a key member of the Mustang team that captured an OUA championship in 1999 and challenged for a national championship in 2000. In 2000, Barrie led the nation in three-point shooting percentage with a 55 per cent average. He also led Humber College to the National Championship Final and a silver medal in 1996-97.
He is currently certified as a Level 3 NCCP coach and has appeared at several coaching clinics since 2006. He will also be part of the Coaching the Coaches Basketball Clinic from April 29-30 held at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.
"I'm looking forward to bringing my work ethic to Queen's and contributing to one of the finest universities worldwide," said Barrie. "We have considerable work in front of us, but with the commitment made by the University, I believe we can attain significant milestones in the near future."
