WATERLOO, Ont. - Six different players scored as the Varsity Blues field hockey team defeated the Queen’s Gaels 7-0 on Saturday, September 16 in Waterloo, Ont.

Third-year forward Alex Thicke (North Vancouver, B.C.) led the Blues with two goals in their second consecutive win on opening weeking.

Rookie forward Emma Stairs of Kitchener, Ont., opened the scoring in the 12th minute, with Thicke notching her first off a corner just two minutes later.  2011 CIS rookie of the year Amanda Woodcroft (Waterloo, Ont.) extended U of T’s lead to three in the 32nd minute. Toronto held the 3-0 advantage at halftime.

Tegan Stairs (Kitchener) tallied her second goal of the season in the 36th minute, before Thicke added her second of the game on a penalty stroke one minute later. Burlington, Ont., native Ally Evanyshyn and Justine Branco (Mississauga) each scored on corners to round out Toronto’s scoring.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 22 as they host the Western Mustangs and York Lions at Varsity Centre.

WATERLOO - It was a disappointing day for the Field Hockey Gryphons today as they drew 1-1 against the Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo.

Amy Wise put the Gryphons on the scoreboard three minutes into the contest. Brittany Seidler drag flicked the ball on net on a penalty corner and Wise batted the ball down out of the air.

Unfortunately, Guelph was not at their best today. "We were not on top of our game. We struggled to hit the ball cleanly, appeared sluggish and missed opportunities that could have put us ahead. Add to that, Waterloo was a very determined opponent," said head coach Michelle Turley. "We must learn from this experience, make progress each and every day individually and collectively and we will move full tilt ahead."

The Gryphons return to action next weekend to Queens in Kingston on Saturday, September 22 at 12:30p.m.

CALGARY - A penalty corner conversion midway through the second half was all the University of Victoria Vikes would need as they defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Canada West women's field hockey action.

The win follows a 3-1 Vikes triumph on Saturday in the opener, giving Victoria the sweep over a young - and improving - Dinos team at Hawkings Field.

With the game scoreless after 35 minutes, the Dinos were whistled for an infraction in the 49th minute, resulting in a short corner opportunity for the Vikes. Annie Walters-Shumka made good on the opportunity, chipping the ball past Dinos netminder Sydney Hamm for the game's only goal.

From there, both teams had several chances but were unable to cash in on their opportunities. As time wore on in the second half, the Dinos applied pressure and received multiple corner opportunities of their own, but every time they were stymied by either the well-positioned Victoria defence or the solid goaltending of Sheriden Goodmanson, who earned the shutout.

Despite the weekend sweep, Dinos head coach Jenn Swagar focused on the progress her young team has made after losing 11 players from the CIS silver medal-winning squad from a year ago.

"It was really up-and-down today, and I think our basics were lacking in some areas today," said Swagar. "Our attack was better at times, and our theme this year is progression. Every game we want to see some improvements in things we've asked - today it was game plan execution and capitalizing on some of the chances we're presented with. We executed our corners well today and got the ball on net every time, but they played great defence. Now, we have to work on putting the ball in the net."

The Vikes get a breather next week before hosting UBC for a weekend series Sept. 29-30 in Victoria. Calgary, on the other hand, heads on the road next weekend to face the defending national champion Thunderbirds for a two-game set Sept. 22-23.
