VANCOUVER - It took 68 minutes for the UBC Thunderbirds to break a scoreless deadlock on Sunday, but they managed to capitalize on a pair of late chances to pull off a 2-0 win over the Victoria Vikes to close out the regular season.
Canada West scoring champion Victoria Pearson netted her eighth goal of the season with just two minutes left on the clock. Her drive from the top of the circle off a penalty corner took a deflection off a Vikes defender and squeezed inside the far post.
The Vikes then pulled goalkeeper Kaitlyn Williams in favour of an extra attacker, but Canada West Rookie of the Year Natalie Sourisseau iced the game for UBC in the 69th minute when she flipped a backhand shot into the empty net.
The T-Birds finish the conference season with a 9-1-2 record, while the Vikes took second place at 6-4-2. The two squads will now prepare for the CIS national championships in Guelph, where the T-Birds will be looking to defend their title and add to their record 12 McCrae Cup wins.
The CIS tournament runs from November 4 to 7 at Guelph

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos concluded their
2010 season with an emphatic 5-1 victory over the University of
Alberta Pandas Sunday at Hawkings Field.
Carolina Romeo scored twice, while Courtney Campbell, Serena
Lockhart, and Keara Chicquen contributed a goal apiece for the
Dinos. Alberta’s Jennifer Cousineau scored in the dying
seconds to spoil Dinos goaltender Steph Petrowitsch’s shutout
bid.
The Dinos end the season third place in Canada West with a 5-5-2 record. It is the best the team has done in its four years under Swagar’s guidance. She was recognized after the game as this year’s Canada West Coach of the Year. Alberta went 1-11-0.
Following the match, the Canada West all-stars and awards were handed out. Swagar was named the Canada West coach of the year for the third time in her four seasons at the helm of the Dinos program, while Petrowitsch earned the conference’s nod for the Gail Wilson award as Outstanding Contributor.
Romeo, Campbell, and Longworth were named 2010 all-stars for the Dinos, while Jackie Trautman and Jennifer Peacock grabbed all-star nods for the Alberta Pandas.
Guelph 5, York 1 Final
WATERLOO, Ont. - This weekend in Waterloo, the Gryphons hit the win column twice posting a 13-1 regular season record to secure top spot in the OUA for the second consecutive year. The Gryphons defeated Carleton on Saturday 7-0 and York on Sunday 5-1.
Saturday, Guelph blanked Carleton 7-0 ignited by a 4-goal performance from Brienne Stairs. Rookie Laura Gordon recorded a hat trick, her first as a member of the red, black and gold side and Brittany Seidler notched three assists.
On Sunday, in the final league contest, the Gryphs defeated the York Lions 5-1. Seidler struck first eliminating the Lions' netminder after a string of five consecutive passes was initiated out of the backfield. Fifteen minutes later, Gordon scored the game winner, her 4th in two days and 7th as a Gryphon (7 in 7 games and 10th in the OUA). Brienne Stairs netted a hat-trick while Seidler added a single for her 17th on the season.
On the defensive side of the ball, netminders, Kaye McLagan, Dorothy Marcy and Alex Bland and the defensive line combined for a mere 12 goals against tying for least goals against (.86). 2010 marked yet another campaign of new benchmarks for Guelph. The Gryphons amassed 85 goals in league play to set a new record in not only Guelph's history but also that of the OUA.
To cap things off, prolific goal scorer, Brienne Stairs recorded 7 goals in two days tallying an unprecedented 32 goals. This marks the most goals ever scored in a season for Guelph. Over her career, Stairs has accumulated an astonishing 87 goals in OUA league play.
