OTTAWA (CIS) – Running back Dillon Campbell and defensive lineman Kwaku Boateng, both of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, as well as Ottawa returner Vincent Campbell are the first CIS football players of the week for the 2014 season.
The regular schedule kicked off on Labour Day in the OUA conference and gets under way this weekend in the RSEQ, Canada West and AUS.
Dillon Campbell, a fourth-year kinesiology student from Whitby, Ont., was honoured on offence thanks to a record-breaking performance in a convincing 53-17 road win over Toronto. The 5-foot-8, 195-pound senior exploded for 293 yards on only 16 carries to erase the previous single-game school mark of 263 yards on the ground set by Nick Cameron in 2005. Campbell, who led the OUA last season with 867 rushing yards, found the end zone on a 74-yard run in the first quarter and on a career-best 98-yard scamper in the fourth.
Boateng, a second-year business student from Milton, Ont., also entered the Golden Hawks’ record book on Monday and took home the weekly honour on defence. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound sophomore, who was selected to the OUA’s all-rookie team a year ago, recorded four quarterback sacks against the Varsity Blues, one more than the previous single-game team standard which was shared by four players. He also forced a fumble and added another half tackle for a loss in his season debut.
Vincent Campbell, a second-year criminology student from Lachute, Que., was the choice on special teams following a spectacular all-around performance in a 51-7 domination of York. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound speedster racked up 125 yards on five punt returns, including a 72-yard score early in the second quarter, which was the only major off of a return in week one. He added a 30-yard TD reception midway through the fourth frame.
