Acadia receiver Brian Jones nominated for Hec Crighton Trophy

OTTAWA (CIS) – Brian Jones, a prolific inside receiver from Acadia University, is the AUS nominee for the prestigious Hec Crighton Trophy, which will be presented to the most outstanding player in CIS football later this month.

The Atlantic conference unveiled its annual awards on Thursday. The OUA and Canada West recipients will all be announced on Nov. 13, with the RSEQ winners following the next day.

Other AUS honourees for the 2014 season include Saint Mary’s linebacker Jonathan Langa (defensive MVP), Mount Allison defensive tackle Jacob LeBlanc (outstanding down lineman), Mount Allison running back Chris Reid (rookie of the year), Acadia defensive back Sean Stoqua (Russ Jackson Award nominee) and Mount Allison bench boss Kelly Jeffrey (coach of the year).

Jones is the third Acadia player in four years to claim the Chris Flynn Trophy as league MVP, following in the footsteps of former Axemen quarterback Kyle Graves, who had been selected in both 2011 and 2012. The third-year science major from Enfield, N.S., set a single-season school record this fall with 57 catches in eight games, the second-highest total in the country this season and the second best in AUS history. He also led the Atlantic conference in receiving yards with 639, while his three touchdowns - all on receptions - tied him for the team lead.

The CIS individual awards will be presented on Nov. 27 in Montreal, two days before the 50th TELUS Vanier Cup final set for 1 p.m. at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium (Sportsnet, Sportsnet 360 & Radio-Canada).

NOTE: The AUS champions will be crowned on Saturday when StFX (4-4) visits reigning titlist Mount Allison (8-0) in the Loney Bowl at 2 p.m. AST, live on Eastlink TV and www.AUStv.ca ... The championship games in the three other conferences are set for Nov. 15.
