QUEBEC CITY – First-year kicker Vincent Dube set a Bishop’s Gaiters modern-day record with an 81-yard punt in the first quarter of Sunday’s RSEQ University Football game in Quebec City.  It was the lone bright spot for the Gaiters who fell 64-3 at the hands of the No.1 Laval Rouge et Or.

Laval’s victory extended a pair of CIS records they own; 24 straight wins and 69 straight triumphs on their home turf. The nation’s best team proved yet again why they have been a unanimous number one selection in each of the polls this year.

On a blustery afternoon in the provincial capital, Dube (Montmagny, Que.) had his best day in purple.  He punted 10 times averaging 46.8 yards including the Bishop’s record 81 yarder at the 2:13 mark of the first stanza.

Hugo Richard (St-Bruno, Que.) led the way for Laval.  He set an RSEQ record with seven touchdown passes while accumulating 507 yards through the air.  Nine different Rouge et Or caught a combined 24 completions from Richard while he attempted 31 passes and was intercepted once.

The hosts dominated every aspect of the game. They outgained the Gaiters 628 yards to 111.  Their scoring plays included a 103-yard screen pass and a 102-yard kickoff return to pay dirt in front of the boisterous 13, 242 spectators at Stade Telus.

“I think this opened a lot of eyes,” said Gaiters head coach Kevin Mackey.  “We are a young team that will learn. Some of our younger guys had the chance to play in this atmosphere and gained some valuable experience.”

Bishop’s (1-5) has a quick turnaround after falling to the No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or (6-0) on Sunday. They will host the No. 5 Montreal Carabins (5-1) in their penultimate game of the 2014 regular season campaign.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Coulter Field.  Tickets will be available online at www.gaiters.ca/tickets starting on Monday.

Gaiter Bites: All three Bishop’s quarterbacks saw action for the second straight game with fifth-year Shane McDonald (Uxbridge, Ont.) handling the majority of the snaps…Justin-Alexander Warden (Ottawa) was the leader of the defense.  The starting linebacker recorded five tackles and had an interception.
