Joey Cupido returns to the Marauder line-up after missing nearly all of the 2013 season due to an injury suffered in the team’s opening game win over Ottawa. His absence was keenly felt as he was coming off a 2012 campaign that saw him named a first-team All-Canadian, helping McMaster to a second straight OUA title and a berth in the Vanier Cup.
Over his varsity career Cupido has been an extraordinary ballhawk from his cornerback position and he tied the CIS record for most interceptions in a playoff game, picking off four passes in a 2011 Marauder semi-final victory over Queen’s.
A Hamilton native, Cupido came to McMaster as a multi-sport competitor, and he continues to demonstrate his athletic prowess as a professional lacrosse player while continuing as a McMaster student. Selected in the 2012 entry draft by the Colorado Mammoths, Cupido was named a member of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) All-Rookie team. His accolades as a pro lacrosse player nicely mirror the recognition he has received for his exploits on the gridiron.
Looking to end his CIS career on a high note, Cupido is one of four 5th-year seniors that have been teammates through the championship campaigns, and who will patrol the McMaster secondary together in 2013. As a former All-Canadian, he is being counted on to be a team leader and stabilizing influence as McMaster strives to get back to the big game in 2014.
“12 career playoff interceptions in 12 career playoff games is the best statistic to explain who Joey Cupido has been for the McMaster Marauders over the past four seasons,” exclaimed Marauder coach Stefan Ptaszek. “Joey is a pure play-maker who deserves to be recognized as one of the best big game performers in our school's history. It’s extremely exciting to have him back for his final year at McMaster, and he will lead a veteran group that is determined to get back to the Yates Cup and beyond.”
